Bring a purse, but also bring a tote to put your books and pencils and etc. in. Or, if you have a big enough bag, you could just use that. I've gone to 3 different high schools in my life (I'm 18 and out of HS) so I know how you feel. Just don't be shy! I regret doing that so much now! You'll make a lot more friends in the start because no one will know you and they'll all be curious about you, so tell them about yourself! Don't get mixed in with the wrong crowd. And please don't try to impress people. Just be yourself. Trying to impress people can get out of hand VERY quickly. Don't give in to peer pressure. I have a lot of experience with starting at new schools, especially high school, so please e-mail if you want to! (:

Well depending on the school district some have restrictions on what you can have, some require you have a see through purse & backpack. Being that you have been home schooled since 3rd grade, I'm inclined to think that your parents were very particular when choosing what public school you may attend. Be sure to check w/ the school on regulations & pick your items from what you may have in school. I took a backpack for my books & a purse for my make-up, gum or toothbrush, brush, & necessities you may need that time of the month. Just be yourself & DON'T change to try to impress anyone. Public school is a lot different from private school & completely different from home schooling. You are going to be fine & it will be a great opportunity for you to meet new people & form life long friendships.Just remember to be yourself & don't let anyone pressure you into or do something you don't feel comfortable w/ or do anything for the sake of fitting in. High school can be tough & kids can be mean but don't lose sight of who you are or your morals & you will be fine. Best of luck to you on your journey! Hope I helped.

Do NOT be nervous. Do NOT be shy.

I know that sounds really, really strange, and very obvious, but you don't want to start off on the wrong foot.

I started HS in grade 9, and I was so quiet and shy, I didn't say anything. I made 3 friends by grade 11. THREE. And not in grade 9. It was really torture - I would hide out in the library at lunch or run to my dad to take me out, and I always had trouble with finding groups to work in.

In grade 12, I decided, "To Hell With It".

Anytime a funny comment came in my head, I said it. When a group project was assigned, I confidently asked people to work with me, rather than waiting for the last person that was partnerless to come to me. I smiled and laughed all the time. People started noticing, and now I have an fleet of friends!

Friends are what will help you get through school. You need to practice being open and confident around new people before you go, so that you meet the right people when you're there, and don't end up stuck with people that you don't like, or that don't like you. You don't wanna be known as that "awkward" kid.

    That's my main advice.

    Some small pointers are:

-Bring a backpack, but make sure it's small enough to fit in your locker

-Have at least two binders, one for your afternoon classes and one for your morning classes. Or better, one (small - like 1 inch) binder for each of your classes. A big binder will get too big too fast.

-Go for a fabric pencil case, not a big hard plastic one.

-Have TONS of pencils, pens, and lined paper. Not only will you need them, but people will always be asking you.

-Don't stand in the middle of the hallways talking to people. Trust me. Upperclassmen will get really annoyed, really quickly. Get your friends to move to the side of the hall.:p

-Bring pictures of friends and things that like that decorate your locker with! You'll be looking at it for a year!

-Use the agenda they give you. It will be the ONLY way to remember all the homework and assignments and test days you have (before the day they're due).

-Do not suck up to teachers, or try to have a good relationship like you had with your homeschooling teacher. This doesn't sit well with other kids.

-Remember, you can be smart and still cool and fun. You don't have to pick. Make sure all your school is getting done, and make time for friends, too. Be able to joke around in class, and don't take everything SUPERseriously.

Basically, do what comes naturally, to you.

    You'll find your niche.

Well it depends on what you want style or comfort? Oh and the classes your taking or whether or not you'll have a locker. Personally i like the purse because it's really cute, but boy does it kill my shoulder! And as far as the whole going to a new school thing is your not gonna be the only new kid! I was so scared for high school but its not as big and bad as everyone thinks. Trust me movies and shows having nothing right. No one really cares what you look like except for you. As long as you brush your teeth and shower regularly you'll fit right in. Plus don't worry about style because no one cares what you wear either. It's all personal preference. As far as teachers go be prepared to have less personal time and it's harder to get a question asked. I'm sure from what i know high school is bigger and faster than home school so be prepared. Oh and just be yourself you'll make new friends in no time! Everyone has friends even the ones you consider a nerd. Best of luck! I'm sure you'll be just fine! =)

Most public school's have restrictions on what kind of a backpack you can bring. Most school's now don't allow the backpack to leave your locker. When I was in HS 7 years ago I took both. The backpack to take my book's to and from school and the purse for all the necessary items....makeup, gum, money for lunch, my cd player...Good Luck :)

a backpacks better if you have alot of books/notebooks... but im gonna switch to using a big big because it looks better (LOL)

ummmm bring your own pens/pencils...that way you dont have to borrow things

your locker may be a little harder for you if you've never had one before (i remember when i first got a locker in middle school, the first couple weeks i always needed to ask people to help...lol...but now im good) but usually most people are nice and will help you out if you just ask

dont worry just be yourself!!! and also the campus may be confusing since its so big so just ask people (the security [if there is any at your school] are probably the best to ask for directions)

anyway just dont be nervous and good luck :)

You bring a back pack to carry with you to all classes in addition to having a locker. a purse isnt necessary.

Backpacks are nice so you can carry most of your stuff and not go back to your locker. Just be yourself and don't try to impress anybody, and it isn't hard to find others like you in school.
