everybody is right, it depends. $25-50/hour is a good estimate. 25 at a slower, suburban/rural area and 50 in the city. many times RDHs are paid by the hour w/w/o benefits. but some are paid by production. meaning you pay is dependent on how many and what type of cleaning you do. a good estimate would be 25% of production and around 150-500 dollars a day. this is dependent on how busy the practice is and prices being charged.
now having said that RDHs do make very good money. banker's hours (8-5), no call, no weekends, some independence, etc. however, why not become a dentist or medical doctor? yes there's more schooling (6-10 more years than an AA), more school costs, but you make more money in the end. or become an RN. RNs can make 65-100k/year, you work in a hospital with alot people versus working in a small to medium sized dental office.
whichever path you take RDH, DDS, MD, RN, or whatever, talk to someone who is one of the above already and ask them to follow them around for a day or two. better to know you hate (or love) something now then later.
good luck and take care.

My friend is a hygienist and she makes $50 an hour. I'm sure it depends where you live and who you work for.

My friend has a friend who is a dental hygienist and she makes about $30 an hour.
I'm sure it differs everywhere though.
