Open up the old computer and unplug the hard drive and then plug it into your new computer, then you should be able to access the files becasue the old hard drive acts as a DATA drive.
If you dont want to open up your new computer you can buy a docking station for your hard drive, i had the same problem.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/NEWlink-USB-Docking-Statio... the £12 is the one i used and i am now selling.

If the old computer with xp won't turn on, you could take out the hard drive and install it into the new computer. Assuming all of your old files are undamaged, you should be able to find them.
Alternatively, you could place the drive in an external case and connect via cable.

You can either transfer them onto a USB Memory Card or opening up a Dropbox account and loading all your files there.
