Where can I get free microsoft technical assistance?

18 months to 2 years ago I found a phone number which connected me with actual microsoft technical assistance (affiliated with microsoft) for free. I am getting the "blue screen of death" on my laptop now and need help but cannot locate the number again. When I search on the Microsoft site all I find is technical support for a fee. Please help!!!! Thanks.

I don't know of anyplace at Microsoft that you can free technical assistance. They charge by the hour. If you are seeing the "BSOD", that should be fairly simple to fix. Ninety percent of the time, the quickest fix for a "BSOD" is to perform a system recovery. It takes two to three hours and is usually much easier than hunting down viruses, trojans, malware , etc. on your computer. There are other web sites that will assist you without charge via a question and answer type of forum. This is a slow way to get help though. You didn't mention what brand of laptop you have or the operating system you have installed, so it's difficult to tell you what to try. If you perform a system recovery, just make sure that all your personal files and software you installed are backed up so that you re-install everything after the recovery. I usually perform the system recovery at least yearly to "clean" up the system anyway. Good luck!

Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new software, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info/

No one is gonna give you technical service for free, you are kidding yourself. You'll have to pay.
