Can anyone verify this quote by TS Eliot and where he said it?
"People are only influenced in the direction in which they want to go, and influence consists largely in making them conscious of their wishes to proceed in that direction."

T.S. Eliot wrote a great deal.
Much was ("Anglo-Christian") poetry, many essays and reviews (on other writers, like "Blake, Shakespeare, Milton"), the "The Murder of ___" (dang, forgot; it was of Thomas Beckett though) and the "Old Possum"-type nearly-handbooks of "light verse" about behavior as displayed by cats, not applicable...
...I couldn't find this quote at the above reference.
You do know Eliot was a great believer in the past greatly influencing the present. He stated (approximately) study of old myths and Certainly old poems were needed for current poets to write -they had to learn from a sort of "earth" consciousness... and Certainly from the spiritual, too.

Read a lot here too, but didn't see this line.
It could even be in his long piece about the "temptation and martyrdom" of Thomas Beckett. Yet I read a lot from that at enotes.com and saw how the man was tempted; quotes of what the Chorus said about things; didn't see this line.
Here I just put "T.S. Eliot quotes" in the search box and got many familiar ones (have studied him before, though years ago, ie. "...Prufrock" etc.) but not this particular line.

Eliot's work is still under copyright I'd say, since he died in 1965, but will leave this link for your exploration as well...
