Why do dogs have "kicky spots"?

Both my dogs have areas which, when I pet and scratch them, they reflexively kick their hind legs. So I was wondering: to all those dog people out there: why is it that dogs have these "kicky spots"?

Basically the same effect as being tickled, but they react when it feels so good it makes the same reaction. I am sure if they could laugh they would.

My dogs have these. The favourite areas are the chest, stomach and side. I believe it's called the scratch reflex.

My Father knew the answer to this question, rest his soul. "They are playing the banjo." LOl

A natural reflex most likely. But they do look as if they are playing the banjo and that is what I have always said.
