Umm… How often such questions have been posted.

The following is my personal opinion.

I think black person will be stared more often than whites, because black persons are rare by comparison with whites, in Japan. Many whites live in my neighborhood. But I've never seen black person in my area (a suburb of big city).

In my area, people glance at white persons and will stare black persons. Then people try to ignore them. That’s all. Nothing will happen.

By the way, I think Bobby Oregon is not good example. He may be not always regarded as an intelligent man. Rather, Jero is better example, he is regarded as well educated person, I suppose. And any Japanese knows U.S. president as an African American.

I went to Japan with a Zimbabwean (meaning he was actually BLACK), and he received no odd treatment. Since there were many blacks stationed in Japan after WWII, the Japanese people are accustomed to them, and in fact there is a very famous celebrity (Bobby Ologon) who is black.

There are some blacks in Japan. Many of them work for night clubs. Most of them are African though. There are many black military people there as well.

If your friend wants to go to Japan,he should go.People may look at him not because he's black, but because he's not Japanese.Japan is about 98%+ Japanese. So anyone else who isn't Japanese will stick out.He won't be the only black guy there.

Good question. I have heard horror stories about black people going to Japan and I have heard that they have been treated nicely. My deal is, you have to go for yourself. I have met some Japanese online and they seem to be very sweet people in general. From what I know of them I like them and I'm sure they will like me too, so that's what I would say to your friend. Tell him to just be himself and let them know that he appreciates their culture as that is a big deal for them. I can't wait to go, myself. It seems like such an amazing place.

The Japanese usually like black people. Black people usually share the same level of intelligence with white people, but they are much more friendly and outgoing. Adding to that, they are kind of people who wouldn't think of themselves as like the king of this earth just because the average IQ is a bit higher than black people's. Black people I see seem reserved, self-esteemed, and educated. Not like some street smart punks who are good at jibberish.

    Okinawa is full of blacks.

I'm sure half of kanagawa (where the other military bases are) have lots of blacks. That means black Americans traveling to Tokyo and such.

It is not strange. However, children might stare. I get lots of stares from young children, even though Okinawa is full of non-Japanese.
