My puppy has diarrhea with mucous in it and is hardly eating?

My puppy has diarrhea with mucous in it and is hardly eating. She is very active and doesn't appear ill but I'm concerned about her eating. She is 12 1/2 weeks and about 2.5 lbs. My husband did give her pieces of different foods i.e. ham, pepperoni a couple of days ago and it started today. Do you think this is what caused it? She will eat a tiny bit if I hand feed her (on the ground) but that's it.

Update:

Thank you all for your answers! I know people food is bad and no this is not what we feed her (as I said my husband gave it to her and was unaware she couldn't eat it and it wasn't a lot) she eats just hard food - per her Dr. until they are six months I was told. I do believe as some of the others said that it was the because of the food but wanted to see what others thought. She would also eat dog food a little if I put it on the ground for her but not by herself out of the bowl. I did give her some yogurt and a little rice as suggested on the internet. I couldn't call my vet because it was after hours thus I came here. I think if she had Parvo she would not have been hopping around like a bunny and playing with her toys, no vommiting and ate a little and if we ate she wanted some. She did eat by herself at midnight :). When she went to the bathroom my husband said the first time it was hard but still had a little diarrhea left. I will call the Vet this morning to see what else to do

More than likely, the spices, fat, and chemicals in the pork products that your husband gave her caused her to have an upset stomach, and she's not feeling much like eating because of it.

First, fast her for 24 hours to allow her stomach to "reset," so to speak. Provide her with lots of clean, cold water. Then, for 2 days, feed her a recovery diet: Boil 1/3 cup of brown rice with 1/3 pound of hamburger, and mix in 1 tbsp of plain, unsweetened yogurt. You can adjust the amount based on the dog's size/appetite.

If she turns that down, see a vet, as she should not go more than a day without getting some good food in her system.

FYI -- If you're not already, consider switching your puppy to a premium dog food in order to bolster her digestive system in the future. Check your food on www.dogfoodanalysis.com, and depending on its rating, you might check out some of their 6 Star Foods for your dog.

    Good luck!

This is colitis (inflammation of the colon) caused by eating something which has disagreed with her, e.g the ham and pepperoni your husband gave her. Puppies cannot digest spicy foods of any kind.

The best thing to do is give her some natural bio-yoghurt to settle the gut This will put a lining on her stomach. Then feed her on a very bland diet of plain boiled fish or chicken with rice for 2 days and then gradually introduce her normal food on the third day. Just make sure she has plenty of water to drink.

Fatty treats such as Pigs' ears,Rawhides and cooked bones will have the same effect on a dog so be very careful what you give her in future.

Don't force her to eat. If her stomach is a bit queasy she won't feel like eating just yet.

You would normally starve an adult dog for 24 hours after a bout of colitis but it is difficult to do this with a puppy so just stick with the above regime and she should be as right as rain in a day or so.

At that age and size, the diarrhea can be very dangerous. Could be worms, could be parvo (God forbid) or could be the inappropriate food hubby gave her, but since it's been a couple of days since then, I doubt it. If she's still having diarrhea tomorrow, get her to a vet. If you can't get her to a vet quickly, try cooking her some chicken and rice and feed her small amounts several times a day. P.S. Don't de-worm her with store bought wormer no matter what the label says. She's too small to safely do that. Take a stool sample to the vet and have it tested. If she has worms, the vet will prescribe safe meds.

If diarrhea is the only symptom and it goes away within a day or two, it's likely that your dog simply ate something he shouldn't have.

But if he has any other symptoms, such as vomiting, loss of appetite, or lethargy, if there's blood in the stool, or if the diarrhea is chronic, there may be a more serious problem. If you observe any of these symptoms, definitely contact your vet.

That sounds like parvo and you your pet needs to see a vet immediately! I'm not kidding! Parvo is very dangerous and it sounds like he has it! Puppies can di very easily with pavo, so hurry! It can be treated if caught early! Quick! Mucous and dhairrea and lack of appetite are the biggest symptoms of parvovirus!

Absolutely that's what caused it. Bad husband. pepperoni !!!!

    NO PEOPLE FOOD.

If it is not gone by to-morrow, feed pup boiled, drained hamburg plus boiled rice for a few days until her stomach heals.

    Have cold water nearby always.

    take it to the vet?

btw, you shouldn't feed your pet human food.

there's a reason it's called human food and not pet food.

Yes, that's what probably caused it. Spices and salt in preserved meats like that are bad for dogs.
