I had a weed induced panic attack a week ago, and am still panicking: how do I make it stop?

A week ago I experienced a panic attack after smoking weed. This has happened to me only twice before. The first time was three months ago, and it was so severe I ended up in the hospital (I couldn't stop vomiting for at least two hours, and couldn't breathe or move for almost four hours). They tested me, and it wasn't laced with anything, so I'm pretty sure it was panic. The last couple of times haven't been as bad, but after the last one a week ago, my nerves are extremely high and I feel like I'm about to have another attack all the time. Most sensations that never bothered me before now feel like potential triggers: smells, tastes, moving or sitting still, breathing deeply, listening to people's voices, watching people's facial expressions, and even swallowing water. I've never, ever been like this before, and I don't know what to do. I know some people are more prone to things like this; I've experienced anxiety and depression for years, but I never had a panic attack until I smoked weed. I also smoked it for over a year before anything like this happened. I don't even want to smoke weed anymore; it's just not worth it. I'm experiencing a lot of very uncomfortable depersonalization and derealization, which also makes me feel like I'm about to panic.

Panic attacks are the most terrifying thing I've ever felt. My skin goes numb, my heart begins to race extremely fast, my mind feels like it's warping and I'm going insane, and it feel like I'm going to die! I'm becoming agoraphobic because I'm afraid of something bad happening if I go out somewhere. I'm also under stress right now and traveling in a country that isn't my own. I don't want to go back home yet, but unless I can control this I might have to. I know the fears that make me panic are irrational, but that doesn't stop it. Would an anti-anxiety medication help at all (I'm on an anti-depressant right now, Wellbutrin, but maybe something else would help)? Has anyone else ever experienced anything similar, and was able to recover? I'm not feeling like myself anymore; please help!

Unfortunately, and I speak from experience, one big panic attack can keep you in panic "mode" for a good while. It puts you in a state of fear, fearing the next one, and its not a pretty cycle. I also know, from personal experience, that weed CAN kick off major panic attacks. The problem you have now is not from the weed still, but its residual from having that one big one. you are telling my story from 15 years ago. From about age 20 to 25, it was a hard road. I understand how people voices, noises, trouble swallowing, and all that feels....I also couldnt stand things touching me like my seatbelt, bra, whatever. Sometimes deep breathing into a paperbag when you start to feel one coming on can be helpful. Also, I would have to walk, pace, it off and keep my mind busy if I could so I was focusing on something other than my discomfort. I wish I had advice, however, I as well as others in my family who suffered the same thing, simply had to grow out of it. In the meantime I pray for you. And hey, even Jim Morrison from the Doors had weed give him panic attacks! So if nothing else, I hope this response at least lets you know that you are not alone.

I know exactly what you're going through. I smoked weed, had a panic attack and now I've had anxiety/depersonalization ever since. It got better and then I took prozac which made it much worse. If you had anxiety problems before, weed probably triggered this anxiety and caused a panic attack. The best thing you can do is not think about it. I know this is hard because you're scared and it's all you can think about, but you need to try and distract yourself. Read a book, watch a movie, but make sure you keep them light. No stressful books or movies! If you feel another panic attack coming on, breathe slowly into a brown paper bag.

You need to try and force yourself to go out. Don't go to the mall for an hour, but start slowly. When you have a panic attack, breathe into the paper bag and tell yourself that you're not going crazy or about to die. Because anxiety and panic attacks never lead to anything worse. FACT. Over time you'll forget about the panic and the rest will go away.

You should go talk to a doctor, though. Xanax can help, but they don't fix the underlying issue. You stop taking the medication and the panic may come back. However, many people do benefit from medication. I'm not saying it won't help, but xanax is highly addictive.

Also be sure to stay away from cigarettes, alcohol, sugar and caffine. These can make you feel even more anxious. Exercise tends to make me feel panicky, but many people find relief from working out since it releases all that pent up adrenalin.

Don't read up on this stuff. You may find stories of people never getting over this, but that is so rare. Don't read about it because it'll freak you out even more. TONS of people experience panic attacks and get over them. It takes effort, but you will kick this thing.

I smoked weed (no other drugs, not even alcohol) 3 times a day for 6 years. I have seen people react like you, and its my personal opinion it has more to do with guilt and paranoia about marijuana (not marijuana induced paranoia) than anything. I'm not condoning it, but I think its no worse for you than alcohol either. Just relax; you have to smoke a whole lot for it to affect you permanently. If that's at all possible. However for developmental reasons, no one under 18 should be doing drugs of any kind.

    STOP SMOKING WEED!

I smoked pot for most of my 20s, and it caused me to have panic attacks.

I haven't smoked it in 2 years, and I STILL get panic attacks. It happens a lot when I'm driving, which, obviously is a bad thing.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but, for me, in order to stop a panic attack, or to make it less intense, I stop whatever I'm doing. I look around at my life, whatever it is I am doing, and see what kind of control I have over things. If I'm not in control of a situation, I take control. And this usually eases the panic attack. When I get a panic attack when I'm driving, I slow down and think to myself, "I'm in control, I'm the driver of this vehicle, I can stop and pull over if I want to, I can brake, I can speed up, I am in full control of this vehicle." And thats usually all it takes. Sometimes, I'll get panic attacks while driving in heavy traffic or snow storms, and then it gets harder to stop them, but what I usually have to do then is pull over, get a grip on my emotions, and then continue on when I gain more confidence.

For me, medications have never helped, I hate to rely on them, and anyone who automatically recommends certain meds to "help" has obviously never tried anything except meds. I've found that many psych meds make conditions worse, or produce other illnesses. For example, my friend started off with mild depression and a mild anxiety disorder. After several years on meds, it turned into Bipolar, then Borderline Personality Disorder, and now, 11 years into treatment, he suffers from chronic, debilitating, severe depression. And he takes 12 psych meds a day.

i just went through a panic the other week. it felt very bad, and i also suffer from derealization. Look, from my experience, the best thing for anxiety is benzodapines such as xanax or ativan, also newer antidepressants such as effexor and lexapro are quite good at treating these things. Of course therapy also helps. So go talk to a doctor now and tell him about this as soon as possible cause he or she will have a better answer than me

At the first sign of one, employ an ANTI PANIC ATTACK breathing technique. Advice from a clinical psychologist is to breathe in to the count of 3: (one thousand one; one thousand two; one thousand three) each takes around a second to say to yourself, in your mind, and out to the count of 3.

View http://deeplyrelax.com/ & www.deepsloweasy.com/html/intro.htm Note: the controlled breathing only helps with the symptoms, as do medications/herbal remedies. Address the underlying cause, which requires some form of therapy; see http://your-mental-health.weebly.com/ re anxiety, & pages H, & I. Imagine that the cause of your panic; your anxieties, fears, your self doubts, self recriminations, all the agonizing "I'm-so-Stupids"; every painful "I-can't-do-it" are huge raging, hurtful bulls snorting and charging at you. You see them coming at you and you hold out your red matador's cape at arms length and simply let them charge right by. Every time they come at you, hold out your arm with the red cape and let them rage and snort and go right on past. Some people recommend nettle tea, with a little honey. Others use Lavender tea, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, but use no milk or cream with herbal teas, or Valerian (caution: use it for 3 weeks at most!). Know how these affect you before driving, or doing anything dangerous, and it is far better to use the treatments, rather than relying on herbal remedies. Free online PANIC COURSE - www.panic-attacks.co.uk also available by email. See the section on panic attacks at www.mind.org.uk also Ebooklet form. They recommend letting a panic attack run its course, without doing anything to treat it, so you KNOW you will survive it. The usual maximum is 30 minutes, until symptoms begin to subside.

after reading just the first couple sentences I can tell you for sure that one of two things has happened : 1) either you are an extremely rare person who is allergic to weed for some reason or something is wrong with your body that it cant handle weed

or 2- that weed was laced with some other drug that you were not aware of
