in your check in luggage you can bring anything you want (except bombs obviously)

in your carry on luggage you can only bring one quart size ziplock baggy of liquids and the bottles cant be larger than 3 oz. (so you have to buy the tiny travel size bottles of shampoo and stuff)

you cant bring scissors or tweezers or lighters in your carry on either.

you cant bring a bottle of water or soda etc through security either. you have to throw it out beforehand.

Since the incident on Christmas Day, with the bomber in Detroit, the TSA is making everyone unpack all of their carry-on luggage at the security counter. They are confiscating everything imaginable. No liquids, gels, glass, metal, or anything even remotely questionable is allowed on board. It is faster to drive from NY to LA than go through the new security.
