I have a 4 port wireless router how can I use 6+ devices at same time?

Just got a PS3 for xmas and also added an additional computer, Now I have 7 users on a 4 port wireless router (Linksys) Can I change some settings so they all work at same time or do I need to upgrade router to 8 port or higher?

Update:

When The PS3 or another device turns on it boots whoever is online off. so I know that there is an issue there.

Buy a cheap 8 port switch and plug it into one of the LAN ports on your router. That will expand the usable ports from 4 to 10 (3 left on router, 7 left on switch - each has one port used up for the link between the two).

Your wireless will still work as is, for any wireless devices....

No, it will run just fine. The 4 ports on the back of the router are for wired connections, you can have a max of 4 computers wired to it. For wireless you can definately have more; you can connect well more than 10 devices to the wireless router. The only problem is if your using the internet at the same time on all the devices it may be laggy if you have a slow connection speed. Other than that, what you have is perfect.

Whoah- you want to try and go wireless! Then there is no limit to the number of devices. I didn't know you could buy a home router with more than 4 ports.

  • Even the PS3 can connect wirelessly. Therefore, you should only need one port for the cable/dsl modem. The rest of the devices can connect wirelessly. If you have more than four without wireless capability, chain the router with a non-wireless switch. They are very inexpensive and this will allow both types of connections if you find the wireless connectivity unreliable.

get an ethernet hub and you can split one of the connections from one to many.
