WHAT WOULD BE THE FUNCTIONS OF A FUTURE WORLD GOVERNMENT?
Peace Keeping for sure, to stamp our any armed conflicts that might crop up.
Member states would keep many of their own laws, etc., like the individual states in USA.
WHAT OTHER FUNCTIONS WOULD YOU EXPECT?
What is the chance of the United Nations eventually performing this function?

Nobody should have any illusions about the future world government, it will never materialize in the world. At the most, the UN may act as a guardian of the international peace and security.
I can only recommend that there must be a "tight bi-polar world" so that world security could be guarded through the US or UN.
If UN emerge as a future world government, then it will do well, if only given full power and responsibility. There should not be any dissention or discord from any other power about the UN future actions. Then only UN can fulfill such a role and protect the world from insecurity.

The big players in the world government as it exists now have all written about exactly what the plan on doing. The UN was set up specifically to be a world government. All your food and carbon is going to be rationed and if your over your allotment of people or carbon you won't get any food (population reduction methods will be left up to the province) and the people of said province (IE. USA) will be taxed heavily for thw Carbon. everyone will be tracked in a master computer via your chip. Cellphone, credit cards (no more paper money). car GPS everything will be recorded. A one world military will squash any resistance (the UN actually defines peace as "the lack of opposition"). the taxes will be extreme to say the least because we will have to pay for the poorer states. The UN will tell us how much our government needs to pay in world taxes and they will collect taxes from there (you and me).

Although we are crouching perilously towards such a government, the freedom lovers left in the USA (those not addle brained by fluorides, McDonalds, dangerous pharmaceuticals) will understandably resist.
American Sovereignty and the beauty of the US Constitution have provided greater freedom and opportunity to the oppressed than anything the UN has ever done.
God Bless America!

Probably the same functions of our federal government, except global in scope. There's a reason why the founders found the Articles of Confederation too weak, they needed a central government to oversee things like interstate commerce.
It would probably be best if the UN morphed into this function, there's a chance it could happen.
