It's like they enjoy watching problems in people's lives. What's appealing about that?

Soaps and drama shows are for people who feel the need to watch a fictional character go through depression, divorce or sickness as they are too boring to have any real excitement in their own lives!

I got into them, when I had this job as a care giver, and the person only had basic cable. To this day I still watch one as much as I can. The reason I like it is because I'm invested into the characters relationships and lives. Sometimes the drama is overboard, but that means that the plot changes all the time, which is why i think people get so addicted, they don't want to miss anything.
The truth is women do like drama and romance, soaps usually have both.

I find soap operas fascinating. They are so exquisitely boring and so delightfully tasteless that they must be irresistible to everyone save the few who aren't enchanted by discussions of nasal passages and digestive tracts. But the same thing I cannot say about thrillers and suspense movies. But alas we do not have producers and directors of the class of Alfred Hitchcock anymore.

I was dating a woman once and I asked her why she watched soaps. I find them a total waste myself. She told me that she just wanted to see FFsssshhhhhh! She illustrated this by wiggling her fingers in front of her face. A good approximation of the "snow" you see between channels. She meant, ofcourse, that she wanted distraction. Oh, well! Not the girl for me.

Some people watch them because they enjoy them, some people have misery in their own life and we all know the adage about misery. Some people watch them for other reasons. The only thing we know for sure, and this is evidenced by their continued existence, someone is watching them.

Because it might be considered a growing experience for some. It depends on the motivation to watch such a broadcast. For me, I like to learn about things I haven't known personally.
