Dog Section: Mutts Don't Get Cancer?
Now I have heard a lot of BS here and in the RW in regards to how mutts are better than purebreds but this takes the cake. A question from earlier about Cocker Spaniels vs Poodle/Cocker Spaniel mixes someone's answer stated that they(Cocker Spaniels/Poodles) do not get cancer like purebred dogs do.
......
So two questions:
Q1. Where would they even get some cockamamie idea like that?
Q2. What is the most ridiculous claim, that is clearly the product of someone's overactive imagination, you have heard in regards to mutts?

Oh, Great. Something new is here..
Q1. From the new disease ''GMSN'' (Give mutts stupid names)
Q2. ''Mutts can't get rabies, So I won't give her the rabies shot'''

Q#! This is so lame, they are making things up as they go along....how ridiculous.
Mutts can get cancer as easy as a pure bred can.....
Q#2 Most ridiculous claim right here on YA is that mutts live longer and do not have genetic defects, and I want to tell you that story is being told by a TC and we should all know who that is by now......she has so many accts, and yet claims to know all about dogs and does not really know a blasted thing...
Yep, she is a legend in her own mind, she makes up stories like this, and she has even stated that mutts do not get cancer, hip problems, but that pure breeds do...and that Show Breeders breed dogs that are mutant.
Yes, mutts/mixed breeds can get all the diseases pure breeds do and maybe some easier as they are a product of so much down breeding to get Designer dogs.

I have 5 dogs......4 purebred and one mutt. Only the mutt has ever had cancer. So I can say a big fat Bullshite on that one.
People like to believe fairy tales....they hear crap like that and it sounds like a good idea so they run with it. I like the idea of the tooth fairy but I'm not putting teeth under my pillow anytime soon. People need to use their heads! Geeze!
As for the best claim about mutts, I would have to say that the idea that designer dogs aren't mutts is the best one. Do people not crack open a dictionary anymore?

Actually I have a pup that I still am waiting on the DNA results from. It was a duel breeding (2 different stud dogs). All I can say is that it takes forever to get the results from dog DNA testing. Other than when you do duel breeding's and being able to sort out which pup comes from which stud dog I really don`t know why you would want to have it done. I guess maybe if you were to purchase a pup just to be sure it came from the parents the breeder said it did, but heck even then you have to have the parents DNA on hand as well to verify it. Good Luck and God Bless

Q1:Those are the kinds of people who either did not take genetics or failed genetics. My guess is they got it from the same site that says mutts won't inherit any genetic defects. Really wish I could find that site they are looking at, I think it would be very interesting don't ya think? Really my guess is as good as yours is as to where they come up with this crap. People really should take a genetics class and pass it before they spout off their mouths on things they absolutely have no clue about.
Q2: Well i think the mutts don't get cancer takes the cake.

Genetically, the mutts may have an advantage as cancer runs in certain breeds but with the low grade rancid carcinogenic dog foods being used today, any dog including mutts can easily get cancer. Put your dogs on a whole food diet or whole food dog food and watch their cancer risk do down.

That sounds like something a BYB might say. It also sounds like a general analysis of someone with little common sense. Perhaps they knew several people whose dogs got cancer and someone else owned a mixed breed that did not. It is a very sad fact that people often jump to wrong conclusions. For example:
There were five dogs in the neighborhood, a Poodle, a Cocker, a Doberman, a Rottweiler and a Mixed Breed.
The four pure bred dogs passed away from a malignancy.
The Mixed Breed did not get cancer.
Conclusion: Mixed Breeds do not get cancer.
The argument is flawed and is not logical but you will never convince a narrow mind of this.
The most ridiculous I have heard lately, other than this one is that if you breed a mixed Breed with a Pure bred dog and continue to do this over and over down line...you will end up with a pure breed that can be registered. Or perhaps, one of my favorites: If you have a dog in heat and she is inseminated by more than one dog, with one of the dogs being a pure breed, all of the puppies will be pure bred.

I am very sad & heartbroken to say - Mutts do get cancer. I lost a mutt at 8yr to cancer who had never been sick a day in his life. He suddenly got a spot & took him right away to vet but it was too aggressive & he was gone within 2 mo. I fully expected him to have him for another 5,6 yr as healthy & sturdy as he was but just goes to show you never know what life will bring you.
Some folks believe breeding 2 poor quality purebreds will somehow cancel out the bad hereditary issues/traits of both dogs. Why ..... I have no idea. A wider more varied gene pool can help or it can hinder - there is no way to know especially for ppl with no experience in breeding/genetics as most ppl are.
The ones I hear are most general nonsense of shed-free, hypo, perfect behaving etc etc .
Who are then so surprised to find out, none of it is true.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Mutt do get cancer. How do I know? Because cancer is the reason my 15 year old Rottie/Lab mix died. Whoever said that is a complete moron. Any dog can get cancer purebreed or not.
As for where they got it. My guess is a BYBer trying to con people into paying insane amounts of money for a dog they could get from a shelter for a fraction of the price.

ROFL. My bosses Rottie/Lab mix got bone cancer in her leg at three years old and had to have her leg amputated!
And just to trump some other myths!
I know a 9 month old Great Pyrenees/St. Bernard who has NO hip sockets and is so dysplastic she can hardly stand for longer than five minutes.
I know a million dogs of various mixes who have severe allergies.
Hm...the most ridiculous claim I've heard? That show breeders are the ones ruining dogs. When it's so blatantly obvious it's the idiot breeders who just throw two dogs together who are TRULY ruining dogs.

Ouch, now my brain hurts. I've lost 2 wonderful mutts to cancer and have had many of other dog owners have that same issue.
Q1: From a crappy BYB.
Q2: That my 2 APBT mixes are people friendly because they have lab in them. If they would have been pure breed they would have killed my daughter by now.
