Sharon is right. Location is everything. You can find remote land in Alaska at prices that seem like a steal. The only problem is that you have to fly to them, or they are located very far out of town and it's a long expensive drive. Most have no possibility of ever being hooked up to electricity, water or phone, unless you build it yourself. If that is what you want, then go to the Alaska land records office and look at the ownership maps. (they might be online, try the State of Alaska web site and look for land recording districts) You can contact owners and ask if they would be willing to sell their land. If they bought it when they were young and have since moved into town, they might be happy to sell it to a person who wants to have a remote lifestyle. That said, even Alaska land that is closer to a city may seem cheap to you if you are used to California prices. But that doesn't mean that the values are going to rise any time soon. The Alaskan economy is hurting, too. So, if you are looking to invest, look for a place that is currently undervalued but near a place that is really growing. Another answerer on this site recommended looking at places where people are retiring--Florida, Arizona, Nevada, etc. You might find a place you can buy and fix up that is in an area that will grow in the future. Good luck.
