Math Problem I dont get this...Help?
A spherical snowball has diameter of 10 cm and density .75g/cm3. it is placed in a cylindrical can with diameter 12 cm. after the snow melts, it turns into water with density 1.0 g/cm3. what will be the depth of the water in the can?
so my question is that what has the density got to do with the rest of the questions. I am totally lost on this. and for an equation say 9+8-4 and i want to move the four do I move -4 or just 4? there is a subtraction sign in front of it but would 4 be a positive number as it is?

Volume of sphere = (4/3)πr^3, where r is the radius
Volume of cylinder = πr^2h, where r is the radius and h is the height
The snowball has a diameter of 10 cm, so its radius is 5 cm, which makes its volume V = (4/3)π(5)^3 = about 523.599 cubic centimeters. Its density is 0.75 g/cm^3, so the mass of the snow is (523.599 cm^3)(0.75 g/cm^3) = 392.699 grams.
According to the law of conservation of mass/matter, when the snowball melts into water, it will still have the same mass even though it will not have the same volume. The density of water is 1 g/cm^3, so the volume of the water is (392.699 g)/(1 g/cm^3) = 392.699 cm^3. The cylindrical can has a diameter of 12 cm, which is a radius of 6 cm, so its volume that we know is π(6)^2h = 36πh. Now set this equal to the volume of the water to solve for its height.
36πh = 392.699
h = about 3.47 cm <===ANSWER
In an equation, if you have something like 9x + 8 - 4 = 0, then to move the 4 over, you would do the opposite of what it is showing. In this case, it is being subtracted, so to move it over, you add it to both sides of the equation and you will end up with 9x + 8 = 4.

you would have to add 4 to both sides since you need a +4 to move it to another side in an algebraic equation.
About your question...Water in a solid state has less molecules in the packing (lower density) and when it turns to water, the molecules pack together tigheter (Higher denisty). So basically you find the Volume of the snow ball based on a perfect sphere with diameter of 10cm. This gives you cm^3. take this and times it by the density to get the grams of snow. Then take this divide it or something (based on units) with the new density so you have volume again. Now put this volume in the equation as the answer to the equation of a cylinder of base of 12 cm
