What do you think we should get?

Me and my cousin want to get a small pet and we cant decide. We want rats but are parents said no. It cant be nocturnal because are parents don't like noise. We want it so we can play with them and not worry about them hurting themselves easily like a hamster. We have about 220$ right now and we have a income of 20$ a month. We can always get help with expenses from are parents. So what do you think we should get?

Update:

We want a rodent.

A Chinchilla! would be the perfect pet for you. Upfront it will cost you just about all your money, But taking care of them is fairly easy and cheap! Chinchillas are nocturnal but If you have a silent spinner wheel and a well put together cage, the sound is very soft. I've had my chinchilla over a year and within the first week I got used to the little noise. They don't squeak and bark at you like many other rodents will. They are very friendly and love people.

    What you need:

The chinchilla- first off check your local animal shelters and breeders. Breeders are the best place to buy any animal from because you will know they are healthy and are cheap too! From a breeder, a standard gray chinchilla http://www.takethehandle.com/interactive/wp-conten... will cost about $50. Animal shelters often have older chinchillas and are usually available for just a small adoption fee, such as $20. Chinchillas live up to 20 years with good care. At a pet store they can cost you $150 on average.

Lets say you get one from a breeder for ... $70 ... You have $150 left.

    For a cage:

Chinchillas love jumping and climbing so should have a fairly large cage. But something like this would be fine : http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?sku=1213172...

This is the one I have: http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?sku=361119&...

ok lets say you spend $100 on a cage. You have $50 left. All thats left to buy is food and accessories!

Food bowls sell for $1 each and water bottles for $3 You will need 2 food bowls (one for food and one for hay) and one water bottle. Thats $6. You have $44 left.

This is the best food you can buy for a chinchilla: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productI...

This is the best hay: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productI...

This amount of food and hay will last you three months. You will have $31 left.

Chinchillas require a dust bath Twice a week. The sand can be reused up to 5 times if there is no droppings left in it. You can put the sand in a rubbermaid containter. http://www.petco.com/product/7846/Super-Pet-Chinch...

This sand should last about 2 months. You will have $26 left.

Chinchillas should always have something to chew on. I recommend getting some lava bites. http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?familyid=10...

Thats about all You will need and look at that, you have $23 left! (for chew toys, if you have an apple tree in your neighborhood, just pick off some twigs, soak them in hot water, let them dry, and it's a free treat for your chinchilla!

Good Luck picking out a pet! You can ask me if you need any more info in chinchillas.

Its really a matter of asking yourself what you want in a pet.

If you're looking for a nice, but shy pet a guinea pig is the way to go. Guinea pigs are shy, but "talkative" little critters. They will spend quite a lot of time hiding in their house, but once they are familiar with you, will enjoy being petted, held, and given treats. On the downside, guinea pigs tend to be a bit expensive and a lot of work, and they are nocturnal. I had guinea pigs, and overall they were great pets.

If you're looking for something small, fairly low maintenance, and quiet, you may look into getting a hamster or a gerbil. These can be very friendly, and although nocturnal, quiet. They can run around your house in a ball during the day, and a wheel at night, both fun to watch. After the initial purchase, they're generally inexpensive. On the downside, they are very delicate which limits the amount you can actually play with them.

If you're looking for a playful pet, think about a ferret. Ferrets are very personable and playful pets. They can be trained to use the restroom in a "litter box" and will learn to run around you room without using the bathroom. They are some of the most playful rodents; they can be held and petted. On the downside, they are kind of expensive and often nocturnal.

If you're looking for a quiet, calm pet, a rabbit may be right for you. Rabbits are gentle and quiet, but like to sit in a lap near the ground and be petted. On the downside, they may be expensive and require a lot of maintenance, and they are very shy.

These are just a few rodents that are common and offer a variety of different things. You may also look into reptiles, birds, or even a small dog. Good luck!

Unfortunately, if you want a pet that isn't nocturnal, a rodent may not be for you. However, there are always exceptions.

I have already ruled out chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs, and rabbits because they are large, high maintenance pets. Unfortunately, you have already ruled out rats (which really is the best decision for you). Hamsters, sugar gliders, and hedgehogs are also ruled out because they are all very nocturnal.

If I were you, I would get gerbils. I am not a big gerbil fan, but they seem like a perfect choice for you (besides rats). Gerbils are small, easy to care for, they are awake most of the day, and they are fairly hardy. They are also very inexpensive. However, gerbils are notorious biters and they are stereotypically hard to socialize. Gerbils can make a lot of noise at night what with the chewing and running around. Also, they may not be a good choice for small children. However, they can make excellent pet, and they do sound ideal for you (other than rats, of course).

Please email me about rats. I really think that rats are PERFECT for your situation, and if I were you, I would try to convince your parents to get a pair of rats. Rats are THE BEST pet for you. Please email me at ratbunnyturtlecats@yahoo.com and I will tell you all about them.

Well, most rodent pets are going to be nocturnal to some degree. My rats are usually awake in the morning and around 6-10 pm. They are probably up a little during the night, but I keep mine in the other room so they don't bother me with noise.

I wouldn't recommend any reptiles that frequently need bugs to eat. From previous experience it is a pain in the butt to go out to the pet store once a week to buy crickets. I like the iguana idea, however they get pretty large and need large cages and it is not uncommon for them to become aggressive. A snake might be cool. Once they get large enough, they only need to be fed once or twice a week, which is nice. You have to be the type of person who wouldn't mind cuddling with a snake and feeding it dead rodents. I'd recommend getting a corn snake. They are on the more inexpensive side, don't get super huge, and come in all sorts of pretty colors.

I was deciding between a corn snake and rats, and I went with the rats. Rats are like miniature dogs in personality and I don't find them to be too noisy, but that's just me.

    Hope that helps!

EDIT: Ugh, birds. My roommate had two cockatiels that I wanted to murder. They were loud and went ballistic anytime she came home. Birds tend to live a long time too; cockatiels live for an average of 20 years. Corn snakes live for ~10 years. Compare that to a rat which lives for ~2-4 years.

Don't listen to everyone else, get a nice red-tail boa that can start eating the smaller hamsters, then the rats, then the guineas, then lastly the bunnies. for a single red tail the feeding expense shouldn't be more than twenty a month. Plus, you can play with all the feeders beforehand and have 1 day pets. Everyone is happy.

hands down, bunnies! they are somewhat nocturnal but honestly they do not make much noise apart from drinking from their water bottle. otherwise they are silent animals, can be potty trained, easy to take care of, relatively inexpensive and if you bunny-proof your house they can be allowed to run loose, like we do with ours. if you get one when it is little, they are likely to bond to you better, whereas one that is older and has history with another family will have it's quirks set in and may not be as comfortable with you. either way they are great to be around. netherland dwarfs tend to be a lot more feisty whereas the bigger ones are generally calm. they provide hours of entertainment with their outrageously adorable mannerisms!

You could get two guinea pigs as they are social animals but they are brilliant! :)

Bunnies are great you don't need to have two though ! :)

Chinchillas, you need two because they are social but they are wonderful! :)

You could get a bird like a budgie or cockatiel, they make good pets too! :)

There's a way to have hamsters even if they are nocturnal! :)

You could get a silent spinner wheel! :)

They do sometimes settle in to your times anyway! :)

    Hope I helped! :)

    Good luck! :)

  • aah get a bunny! :D i have 3 and they are all lovely <3 they aren't to expensive you just have to feed them, water them and clean them out a few times a month :) if you want a smaller one i would suggest either a netherland dwarf, a dutch or a mini rex <3 i have a dutch and he is quite small and i have a mini rex and she is tiny and sooo soft! :D good luck <3
