It depends on year make and model. The air injection system is part of the emissions. When it started in the 60's it was called a smog pump. Its a system that injects air into the exhaust stream sometime after it leaves the cylinder. Some engines its in the cylinder head. Some its in the exhaust manifold. Some also have a line that goes into the cat converter. Some cars its still a belt driven pump. On many newer cars its an electric pump. What usually kills the system is there are check valves to prevent the exhaust from flowing into the pump. When those valves fail the exhaust tends to destroy the control valves and or the pump itself. It also lets moisture from the exhaust into the system and if you are in a cold climate it can freeze and damage the valves and pump. It can also freeze and block the lines.
