Does anyone know a good anti virus to use..?

Which anti virus is the best for my home computer? "Norton, McAfee, etc...I'm using Defender Pro at the moment and I have NOTHING good to say about it. I have less than a month left before it expires and I need to know which one is better to use. ( I have windows 98 if that matters.) Thanks everyone.

Try ESET NOD32 Antivirus if you want the paid version:

    http://www.eset.com/

It anit-virus software with spyware and malware protection.

    Or Avast! antivirus Professional Edition:

    http://www.avast.com/index.html

It also a good one among the paid version.

For free version, then try Avast! antivirus Home Edition:

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

You should also get anti-malware program if you didn't have it.

    Try Malwarebytes anti-malware:

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    Or Superanti-spyware:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

For both anti-malware progam,it have paid or free version.

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it's not the AV's fault if it isn't working right. Defender Pro uses either Kaspersky signatures or Bit Defender signatures. They both require at least one gig of memory to work right. With windows 98 your probably lucky to be pushing 256mb of memory. Way lower than what's required for either to work properly. Your computer wouldn't hold up very well to Norton for sure. It is a memory hog. About the same for McAfee. No, You need either a new computer or one of the substandard free AV's like Avast. Avast might not even run right on it either. AVG wouldn't because it's a memory hog to. Get a new computer. That would be your best bet.

Any AV from 2000 up to now probably will not run right on that running system. I know for sure 2005 on up to now will not run right on it. You don't have enough memory or processor speed.

Actually...it does matter...but there is something that matters more. Your computer's stats (CPU type and speed - plus number of cores / Memory / etc).

Unfortunately, 90+% of all the good AV programs and suites currently available won't run on anything earlier than ME, if not XP.

If you don't mind going to Linux, Ubantu (assuming your computer can run it) is supposed to have functionality patches for most of the good Security programs and suites.

Regardless of what program/suite you go with (and I'd advise avoiding freeware), avoid AVGFree as if your life depended on it. AVG's freeware program has what is considered a failing detection rate (60% with the pass/fail mark being 80%). Also, download the program/suite you plan to use from the publisher's home page only. Anything elsewhere is likely to have been cracked, and that means automatic malware on your computer.

On the plus side...most of the viruses currently being circulated can't run on your machine, but the ones that do can be *very* dangerous! (One virus actually flashes the BIOS of Win95, 98, or 2000 computers to blank!)

    Good Luck!

PS: If you plan to upgrade (your entire system), I recommend - in no particular order - ca, Symantec, McAfee, Panda, and (with some hesitation) Kaspersky. If you are not going to upgrade, the VIPRE suite is supposed to be "laptop friendly", so a desktop with restricted resources should be able to use it...but contact Sunbelt Software to see if it is compatable with Win98. In any case, whole suites are generally prefereable to individual programs.

I use Avast now, I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

You have some real hunting to do. Most security products no longer support Windows 98 / SE.

Free Antivirus for Windows - Open source GPL virus scanner

    ... is a Free Antivirus program for Microsoft Windows 7 / Vista / XP / Me / 2000 / 98 and Windows Server 2008 and 2003.

Clam Antivirus has been around for years and years and years. It is a stand alone scanner without real time protection (activated in shareware) - however it does have an Outlook email scanner plug in for attachments. Ity has only a good detection rating as compared to really good and really really really good.

To understand open source just go to SourceForge. (Programmers donate their time to each software project they create year round and it is free/donate).

Now, Clam antivirus enterprise corporate level with Real Time Protection is available in ....

    Hunt !

PS..... Firewall ? You want your machine protected against pinging by hackers - echo requests (never allow those ! ). You get basic stealth with a most basic firewall like the inboard Windows XP Firewall and now Vista Firewall - from Microsoft as part of Windows now which you can use or install more beefed up ones. (Old favorite now owned by Symantec, GET Online Armor Personal Firewall Free for replacement !)

Sygate was so good and popular Symantec bought it though the free version is still around. There are no more updates to the free version one but will sure beat a blank. It is very good in intercepting malware trying to do things inside the system during sessions if infected.

I guess you are going to hear this one more time - time to get a new computer !!!!

well,, I'll try to help you.

    # 1 You have windows 98, That does matter. Hackers live out there in the "BLACK HOLE",and they like a challenge ,like Vista or windows 7...You with windows 98 would be "boring",too easy, they would not bother you,,But you need protection from "spyware", they install programs in your computer and steel your Identity, So you need anti spyware. I like McAfee, also Windows defender is good,,also Yahoo toolbar CAanti spy is good, I use all 3.

Most all spyware need to e-mail your information to their web site, that means that they use the symbol @ to send.

click start,,click search, and in all files and folders, enter @, click search,,,,L.click on file,,press delete key, on the drop down window that says, are you sure you want to delete this file,L.click yes,, after you delete all files, then empty trash bin. "NOW" you know how to clean your computer of spyware.

Source(s): Experience. I'm not sure if this works on windows 98, It works on XP.

I have bit defender internet security and norton. You should try norton, its one of the best and popular. Also, mcafee is a decent choice as well. I would use one of the two. By the way, just a tip, you should upgrade to windows vista or xp if you can.

    Good luck!
