What are the customs for greeting a person?

I need to know what country it is custom to give a person a hug when greeting them. Also what country is it custom to pat a person on the back as a greeting.

I think that in North America(Canada and U.S.), it can vary regionally and vary with families. Hugs are common. I have not seen the pat on the back thing though. Perhaps a hand shake or the ever-popular, other-hand-on-top of the hand shake! Or the double kiss is gaining in popularity, especially in French speaking areas.

I am in Canada, and my family is not huggie. I would never suggest to anyone to hug another as many get upset with this. A common greeting is a handshake. If the people gravitate forward for a hug, then fine, if not a handshake is respectful and acceptable to all.

  • I know at least in the United States, if you are on familiar terms with the person, hugs and pats on the back are ok. For example, if it was your good friend or family member.
