Will a battery charger get my car started?

A little over a week ago I lost my serpentine belt. I drove 2 miles without it but I feel I shouldn't have. On Sunday a shop replaced the belt and the tensioner as well. They said they couldn't get the battery to charge at all and yesterday I called for road service help and they couldn't start it. He told me to get a battery charger to start it. This car is almost 15 years old and I am going to take over my mom's car since she will no longer be driving due to her health. I just would like to get this car running so that it should be worth more than if it was not running if I sell it. Does it sound like the problem is just the battery or did I damage something else while driving without the belt? This car battery is only a year old. Should try a battery charger or is the battery so bad that it needs replacement?

Sounds like your battery is wrecked. and no it will not start off a battery charger unless it is able to charge the battery (which in your case the mechanic said it wont recharge). jump starting, new battery or roll starting if its a manual are your only options hahah. Goodluck hope it all works out! :D

You can get a portable jump start device from different auto parts stores. Chargers are meant to be overnight long-time chargers. They do a better job fully charging your battery though, than just a jump start. Even the jumpstart packs will tell you that if your battery dies and you need to use it, you should charge your battery on a battery charger. A low amp slow charge is the best way to fully charge your battery and prevent the need for a jump.

Most batteries have a 2/3/6/9 year overall warranty with a 2 or 3 year free replacement. Take it back to the supplier. They will test it an replace it. May be some cost depending on the warranty?

If the shop told you that the battery isn't holding the charge...that tells you everything you need to know. Replace the battery. If it is only a year old, and you still have the receipt for it, take it in for a warranty replacement.

    How old is the battery??

If you know that it is over four years old, then replace it. It sure sounds like it to me. If they can't jump it, then that means that your battery wouldn't accept a charge, meaning that the acid cells inside your battery are completely gone. That's why they recommend you get a new battery every 4-5 years.

Go to your local auto-parts store and get a new battery. That should fix it.

The easiest solution is to take the battery to an auto parts store and have them test it.

If it's bad buy a new one and put it in the car. If it's good, charge it and try the car out again - could have a bad alternator if the problem occurs again.

A decent car battery doesn't cost that much (under $100) and will help you sell the car.

If a mechanic told you the battery will not charge... the yeah you need a new battery. You can take it to pretty much any auto parts store and they can test it for free and tell you for sure. If the battery is charging fine then its time to replace your alternator.

remove battery and have it load tested at autoparts store it is a free test a charger that is capable of starting the car will cost more than a new battery

it may get it started. but once you turn it off, it will do the same. you may have run the battery down. i mean way down. try to get it fully charged. if not your battery may have warranty.
