Bible contradictions? Please enlighten me?

I find it incredible that you ask me to believe that the earth was created in six literal days; women come from a man’s rib; a snake, a donkey, and a burning bush spoke human language; the entire world was flooded, covering the mountains to drown evil; all animal species, millions of them, rode on one boat; language variations stem from the tower of Babel; Moses had a magic wand; the Nile turned to blood; a stick turned into a snake; witches, wizards, and sorcerers really exist; food rained from the sky for 40 years; people were cured by the sight of a brass serpent; the sun stood still to help Joshua win a battle, and it went backward for King Hezekiah; men survived unaided in a fiery furnace; a detached hand floated in the air and wrote on a wall; men followed a star which directed them to a particular house; Jesus walked on water unaided; fish and bread magically multiplied to feed the hungry; water instantly turned into wine; mental illness is caused by demons; a “devil” with wings exists who causes evil; people were healed by stepping into a pool agitated by angels; disembodied voiced spoke from the sky; Jesus vanished and later materialized from thin air; people were healed by Peter’s shadow; angels broke people out of jail; a fiery lake of eternal torment awaits unbelievers under the earth ... while there is life-after-death in a city which is 1,500 miles cubed, with mansions and food, for Christians only.

Please please tell me how it is possible for you to believe such things? Why do none of these things happen now? And if you say they do, then i'm unlikely to believe that due to the fact if they did it would be across the media.

Also I have found these, maybe you could help me out by explaining the contradictions :)

He ( "God") said “Thou shalt not kill,” he ordered death for all opposition, wholesale drowning and mass exterminations; punishes offspring to the fourth generation (Ex. 20:5); ordered pregnant women and children to be ripped up (Hos. 13:16); demands animal and human blood to appease his angry vanity; is partial to one race of people; judges women to be inferior to men; is a sadist who created a hell to torture unbelievers; created evil (Is. 45:7); discriminated against the handicapped (Lev. 21:18-23); ordered virgins to be kept as spoils of war (Num. 31:15-18, Deut. 21:11-14); spread dung on people’s faces (Mal. 2:3); sent bears to devour 42 children who teased a prophet (II Kings 2:23-24); punishes people with snakes, dogs, dragons, drunkenness, swords, arrows, axes, fire, famine, and infanticide; and said fathers should eat their sons (Ez. 5:10). Is that nice? Would you want to live next door to such a person?

Thankyou!

Update:

The christians seem to be saying that i don't have the capability to understand? How very condescending!

It's intresting to be that you don't seem to give an actual reason or answer to me and just say it's my fault for not believing.

Update 2:

To terry s, it's funny how you have supported my point without actually realising. YES MEN WROTE THE BIBLE NOT GOD. ITS FULL OF MADE UP STORIES. Haha, thankyou.

I think your questions are valid. Many of the answers here are classic, meaning, they don't actually answer any part of your question. Just believe Jesus and ignore the things that are grotesque about their god. Wow! And you wonder why it is hard to take Christianity seriously. god always gets credit for the good stuff, but never the blame, that is reserved for us. Oh yes, and the context argument...what context gives anyone justification for ripping up pregnant women and innocent children?

I've wondered the same thing for awhile, but i believe that the bible has some symbolism in it- so some things might not be so literal

Also Jesus himself even said some of the things in the bible contradicted what he really wanted

ex. In the old testment it says you should take revenge on someone who does you wrong

and later in new testment Jesus says basically i know you guys were taught to take revenge but i tell you (when someone slaps you cheek turn your other cheek for them) you may know it

As for the miracles it may seem impossible but Jesus was GOD i mean he could do anything, also back then the reasons for things were not very scientific.

There are some weird stuff in the bible like men cannot shave their beards, or sending a child into slavery is ok but i don't believe God wanted that, i think it was written by strict Priests who prolly thought it was "holy" or something

and the entire bible was written by humans and its been around for many many years so some things might be a little fuzzy

i'm not a expert on this whole thing so sorry if it seems kind of unexpertish

but this is what i think :)

Does the Bible contain errors, contradictions, or discrepancies?

Answer: If we read the Bible at face value, without a preconceived bias for finding errors, we will find it to be a coherent, consistent, and relatively easy-to-understand book. Yes, there are difficult passages. Yes, there are verses that appear to contradict each other. We must remember that the Bible was written by approximately 40 different authors over a period of around 1500 years. Each writer wrote with a different style, from a different perspective, to a different audience, for a different purpose. We should expect some minor differences. However, a difference is not a contradiction. It is only an error if there is absolutely no conceivable way the verses or passages can be reconciled. Even if an answer is not available right now, that does not mean an answer does not exist. Many have found a supposed error in the Bible in relation to history or geography only to find out that the Bible is correct once further archaeological evidence is discovered.

We often receive questions along the lines of “Explain how these verses do not contradict!” or “Look, here is an error in the Bible!” Admittedly, some of the things people bring up are difficult to answer. However, it is our contention that there are viable and intellectually plausible answers to every supposed Bible contradiction and error. There are books and websites available that list “all the errors in the Bible.” Most people simply get their ammunition from these places; they do not find supposed errors on their own. There are also books and websites available that refute every one of these supposed errors. The saddest thing is that most people who attack the Bible are not truly interested in an answer. Many “Bible attackers” are even aware of these answers, but they continue to use the same old shallow attacks again and again.

So, what are we to do when someone approaches us with an alleged Bible error? 1) Prayerfully study the Scriptures and see if there is a simple solution. 2) Do some research using some of the fine Bible commentaries, “Bible defense” books, and biblical research websites. 3) Ask our pastors/church leaders to see if they can find a solution. 4) If there is still no clear answer after steps 1), 2), and 3) are followed, we trust God that His Word is truth and that there is a solution that just simply has not been realized yet (2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16-17).

When one only has a surface understanding of something, their judgments are only minimally valid. The Earth being created in 6 days, God 'creating' a fiery Hell, and most of the other things you rail against here are being taken grossly out of context or are simply fictional altogether.

I would recommend you gather some basic facts and work with a Bible teacher on actually learning what it has to say. Then you make an educated decision.

I totally agree. I hate thinking that a God that mean really exists. If all this crap really happened and millions of people still don't get it, why isn't the Almighty sending more godly people down?? HM?? This is exactly why I am not a Christian, because of all those things you said. I also find it annoying how SOME Christians say "The Bible is the only way, just accept it" yet they refuse to actually think about what's right in front of them. I said SOME, not ALL or MOST.

Yes, those scriptures were written by MEN and have been altered time and again ever since by MEN!..God doesnt use biros!

Many of those stories are fables designed to demonstrate some point, but they have been taken as literal..

So how do we separate those teachings which emanate from our Loving Creator and those that dont?

Those *teachings and stories* which are violent, judgemental, threatening and condemning come NOT from God but from MAN!

God is Unconditional Love, meaning Love WITHOUT conditions and thus total forgiveness, so those teachings and stories which talk of forgiveness and Love indeed emanate from our Loving Creator..

God also gave us a brain and discernment to use during this life when some men do cruel things in order to have power over others!..Some use those gifts and some dont!...End of story!

I also don’t know of any contradictions in the Bible. Does every precept mentioned in the Bible apply doctrinally to a Christian? What about the doctrines that appears to contradict each other? In 2 Timothy 2:15 the Holy Spirit states His word has divisions and the "workman" must "study" to "rightly" divide them. When a believer obeys God's word and with study finds these divisions and applies the truths found in them to their proper place, much of the Bible's complexity disappears and many of its alleged contradictions vanish. Furthermore, many of the different manners, methods, and doctrines in the Bible which often trouble people are reconciled, and the believer begins to see the "big picture" of what God is doing. Since properly understanding the Bible's divisions is the key to being sound in doctrine and making sense of its differences, failure to do so can lead to dangerous heresies and spiritual chaos. the King James Authorized Version, the Book that God uses and the Devil hates. It was originally translated under King James I of England between the years 1604 and 1611. The King James Bible is an English translation from the "Textus Receptus" or "Received Text" of the reformation. This means that the KJV is supported by NINETY-FIVE PERCENT OF ALL MANUSCRIPT EVIDENCE. All other translations are based on the remaining five percent evidence. Most people (including Bible college professors) have been led to believe that the new translations, such as the ASV, the NIV, the RSV, and the NASV are just revisions of the old King James Bible. Nothing could be further from the truth! All new translations are based on the Westcott and Hort Greek Text (wrongly referred to as "THE Greek Text" by people who enjoy playing make believe). Westcott and Hort were two English "scholars" who spent the late 1800's communicating with evil spirits and perverting the word of God by fooling around with corrupt Roman Catholic manuscripts. All new translations are based on the work of these two men; so all true Bible-believers avoid the new versions. The King James Bible is from a whole different text , known as the Byzantine or Syrian type text, which comes from a line of manuscripts that run clear back to Antioch, Syria, which just happens to be where the disciples were first called "Christians" (Acts 11:26). God has honored this text throughout Church History, throughout the Protestant Reformation, and since 1611, He has been honoring the King James Bible by saving millions and millions of lost souls with it's preaching and teaching. It is the Book of all Books, because it is the pure and preserved word of God for the English speaking people. The God in the old testament and the God in the new testament are the same. The Trinity doctrine is the doctrine that God consists of three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. Those who deny the existence of the Trinity usually do so because they can't understand it. Those of us who accept the Trinity doctrine don't fully understand it either; we just BELIEVE what God said about it. What did He say about it? He said, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." (I Jhn. 5:7) He said, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." (Mat. 28:19) He said, "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen." (II Cor. 13:14) You can see all three members of the Holy Trinity present at the baptism of Jesus in Matthew 3:13-17. Jesus said when you've seen Him, then you've seen the Father (Jhn. 14:9), and Peter said that when you lie to the Holy Ghost you are lying to GOD (Acts 5:3-4). God the Father is God; God the Son is God; and God the Holy Ghost is God.
