When they say a team controls its own destiny, it means they are in control of whether they get in the playoffs or not. Some teams can only get in if they get help from someone else losing. Their destiny is out of their hands. Others can clinch a playoff spot by just winning their games and it doesn't matter what any other team does. So, they control their own destiny. Win and they're in. Lose and they're out.

Paul had it right. When you hear that term "control their own destiny" it simply means that if a given team wins they will continue to advance to the playoffs. At this time of year many teams are in the predicament that even if they win they may or may not advance to the playoffs because it depends on what some other teams may do.
"control their own destiny" = they win they're in
PS; ther's no such thing as Karma.

When a person does bad things, bad things happen. When a person does good things, good things happen.
When a team plays harder, smarter, more physically, etc than the other team, then they win. Each team controls their own destiny by their own hard work. I don't think it is a matter of Karma.
Thumbs up to those who agree.

I think it's all about timing and "roll". That's why Colts always have a great regular season and lose in the post season.

as a team, you control your own destiny. a little help from refs don't hurt either.
