ok so horses are freaking expensive. not initially, but the cost of keeping them is alot. for me, it costs over $5000 a year to keep my mare, and thats relatively cheap.

Breeds: you need to know what conditoins you would be keeping it in, what discipline you want to do, how much you can spend, and your riding level. this all plays out to the kind of horse you should get. find an experienced friend to help you with these questions if you dont already know them. bc you obviously cant keep a $10,000 warlmblood outside 24 hours a day in wisconsin, nor can you jump on a clydesdale, or barrell race competitively with a fjord. important questions that need to be answered before looking for a horse.

personally, i would say stick with the universal breeds for your first horse. Quarters, Paints, and Apps can be bombproof and excel at all disciplines.

I'm favorite is a quarter horse. They are great. You can do many things with them. The cost depends on if its for recreation or showing. I show and its very hard. The initial cost isn't what gets you. My horse has had to get surgery on his nose and he has had like 4 trips to the vet in a 10 month time span. I'm not a bad owner and he is very well taken care of he's just a klutz and he is VERY curious. He's only coming 5. Owning a horse is a big responsibility and is very costly plus its a bad economy. Make sure you're serious about having a horse. Also make sure you can cover the cost of board if needed, vet, farrier, food, in general care... etc. I'm not trying to convince you other wise, but it helps to know what its about.

    GL!

  • i myself like thoroughbreds but for a first time horse person the best horse would be a quarter horse they are a lot calmer than most breds and they dont get very big.... around were i am in the US i am boarding for 225 a month but there places that go to a 1000 a month but that is the really nice barns and having a horse takes up most of your time if you are taking care of it right

Paints are BEAUTIFUL and I have owned many. The cost though is very expensive. You have food, boarding, shoeing, medical ( and injuries can be extremely expensive), plus the cost of everything from saddles to blankets to bits to even a brush. If you also want to show the horse, keep in mind that that costs money too.

I think a quarter horse is a good first horse. Depending on where you board your horse it could be any where between: 900$, to 150$ a month.
