Lord of The Rings Question (from the Book)?

Why didn't the council view Bombadil as a proper bearer for the one ring? He was never swayed by its power.

This was addressed in the book between frodo and gandalf in Rivendell. Because the ring had no power over him, Bombadil would never give it the respect that it required. He would lose track of it amongst his many other charges under his care and the ring would eventually find a new owner in it's never ending quest to return to its master, and Bombadil would never have known the difference. That alone made him the worst keeper of the ring possible while being the only person who could handle it and not be affected by it.

Interesting question. The reason given in the book was that everywhere else would be corrupted by Mordor and Sauron, leaving Bombadil's forest an island.

You could speculate that the ring would tempt Bobadill's consort or that he would become bored with the duty of guarding the ring. He is so detached from the rest of the world that its danger is as meaningless to him as its power.

I think because he was too unreliable, he wouldn't take the ring seriously enough, so he might lose it, or give it away. It's been a while since I read the book, but I seem to remember something like that being said in the council.

Because Bombadil was a local power. While he wasn't swayed or influenced by it, he still couldn't journey to destroy it. his powers and even his existence was tied to a single place, much like a "local" god was connected to a river or grove.

I read that the council were worried about Tom's lack on interest in the ring and that he would just toss it aside as he had no use for it.
