Epidural question ....?
I am due in 4 weeks and i was planning on getting the epidural as i am not good with pain and i know i will regret doing it naturally half way through labor. What i was wondering is does getting the epidural hurt, what does it feel like and what are the chances of something bad happening. Has anyone else here got the epidural and what were your experience when you got it?

I got an epidural almost 5 years ago with my first against my wishes, the doctor felt it would be best since she had to induce my labor. I remember feeling a pinch and then felling a long tube being inserted into my back it was very uncomfortable to me. After wards, I still have back pains from time to time, before I never had back pains. This is time I am not getting an epidural I am going to stick it out.

To be honest, I was in so much pain by the time I could get the epi that I didn't even feel it! I remember the doc saying "just don't move" and I kept saying "what if I do?!" because I was having such bad contractions that would make me curl up. He just kept telling me not to and never answered my question lol. Before I was in labor, I swore I wouldn't need it, usually I can handle pain. Once the back labor set in, I was demanding drugs and didn't care what they were. It's not even like I had a long labor... 5 hours from the time they broke my water. This time I'm going with the mentality of "I want an epi, but if I don't need it great!" :) Good luck!

It hurts for just a second but really you will be in so much pain from labor you won't notice it really.
Its hard to explain how it feels once it kicks in, its more of a you have to go experience it to know - sort of like labor pains and labor itself.
don't worry about anything bad happening, thousands of women get an epidural everyday with no complications. Theres always a risk of something bad happening - but that goes for every medical procedure, including having children.
Good Luck!

I had the epidural. I wasn't scared at all, I was before I had him but when I started feeling pain I wanted the epidural so bad it didnt scare me anymore. It was over so fast. Felt like a bee sting to me. I imagined it to be horrible, but it was the easiest part! I had no complications, only a numb thigh that stayed numb for 6 months LOL.

I hate needles so i always ask to wait to get mine until i cant stand the pain of contractions anymore and by that time you don't even feel the needle you just feel pressure. My last baby i got and epidural before i was in any pain(against my wishes) and it did hurt a little i felt a pain in my back all the way down my legs. They did give me a shot to numb the area first. It wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be but i would have rather waited until i couldn't stand the pain of the contractions anymore.

You feel a slight pinching feeling and a little bit of pressure, but it goes away very quickly.
The chances of something bad happening are slim to none. The anesthesiologist knows how to administer epidurals, so you shouldn't worry.
I had epidurals with all 4 of my pregnancies and never had any complications. It made labor more enjoyable because I wasn't focused on pain.

I got the epidural with my first pregnancy..
It does not hurt as bad as it sounds..It's just a quick pinch, and sting.
The most important thing to do is stay very still before n during the time it's being done.
Then you will feel the fluid going into your body.
I know this is hard, but if you can try to hold off as long as you can..And there are also other types of meds the dr. can give you through your ivy to relieve some of your discomfort, but ask your
doctor..
I hope this helped you..Good luck to you and hope you have a smooth delivery.

I had to have 2 epidurals. I was trying the whole natural thing and my boyfriend insisted on me getting it because he couldn't stand to see me in pain. I was 3-4 centimeters dilated with my first one and it hurt so bad, I was having contractions and he ended up messing it up and putting it in the wrong place. My second was a breeze compared to that one, a different doctor did it and I was still having contractions but he actually helped me through them. I barely felt that one, and it actually took, my first one I had pain the whole time. I guess it all depends on your doctor and how many centimeters you are. I think if you do get one, get it early and you should be fine.

It is uncomfortable because they make you sit up on your bed and lean forward (it hurts the belly lol to lean forward as you know) but the epidural itself is not that bad it stings a bit when they are doing it but it does not take that long.. and considering you will be having a lot of contractions you won't even care if your back stings for a bit lol.
It's not a big deal and the risk is low.

The risks are very low, I just got back from my apt and asked the doctor a bunch of questions!
He said the worst case is getting an infection but its never bad. I promise I am not trying to scare you but he told me the risks are low and nothing to worry about.
They advise you when you should take it but it really all depends on you.
Ive seen on birth stories when they say its going to be a pinch then youll feel a burning sensation but I agree that youll be in pain that a sting isnt going to bother you!
Congrats and stay positive :)
