I was wondering if a person steals an ipod from a store and registers it can it be tracked down

Yes.. yes it can. Your totally screwed. They are probably on their way to your house right now.. omg man.. I wouldn't like to be in your shoes right now.
Actually thats a good question.. would someone be stupid enough to steal an iPod and then register it? naaaaa.. surely not.

yes normally they chip it with a tracking device
or sometimes they put a software which once removed from the cable stops the ipod working all together
