Wanting to get my Motorcycle License?

I'm 19 years old living north of Los Angeles... I've been wanting to get a motorcycle to drive around town instead of my car... My question is how do I get a motorcycle license? I don't want to buy a motorcycle before getting my license... but you need a motorcycle to take the test don't you?

First thing is to check with your state's MVD. Depending on your state they might have a learners permit type of program so you can ride without taking the riding portion of the test. (Arizona did when I got my license).

Also another option is to look up a MSF course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation). The beginners course is around $150. They provide classroom and hands on training using their bikes. Once you successfully complete the course, you can take the completion certificate to the MVD and it should substitute for the riding and written portion of the test.

Again, this is based off of Arizona's laws when I got my license around 5 years ago, but I imagine California is similar.

In addition to what Kid Prodigy wrote: Since you're 16, you might not be able to leap the hurdle of your closed minded and overprotective mom - er, dad. If, after trying to get him to digest the info you got through the MSF, books, and other sources (not the stupid chopper/stunta T&A mags), he still nay-says on riding you may want to just plain open a bank account (something your parents may actually be willing to help you with, I hope) and start socking away more bucks so when you turn 18 there's nothing they can say or do to stop you. If you already have $3k now, which BTW is enough to buy a decent used bike, when you get one for yourself for your 18th birthday you'll have enough extra cash for some weekend roadtrips. IOW, you'll be able to do stuff that chicks dig.

In Ohio you can get a motorcycle temp permit at 15 and a half years old. My advice would be check your local laws, and see if there is a state provided safety course. Ohio's course takes three days to complete, they provide a helmet and 250cc bike to use during the course. If you are under 17 it's free adults pay 25.00 which cheap. If you complete the course in Ohio then you also pass and can go purchase your license with out taking the state testing. The only limits are you must wear a helmet the first year. While you ride with a temp you can't ride a passenger travel on the freeway and must wear a helmet. Good luck and be careful, I've been riding for 37 years and people get crazier everyday you have to ride always in defense mode anticipating what the other guy is going to do.

some motorcycle dealerships rent motorcycles,so you might want to check that out, other than passing the written, and driving test you'll be set.

To get your motorcycle permit you have to take a written test.

For a full motorcycle endorsement can take a 3 day safety course class and bypass the written test (which is hard.) But you will have to take a riding portion to get your endorsement.

Also check with your local DMV to find out what else you have to do.
