There are several ideas that I come up with. One that I have been telling people about a lot lately. Shipping containers. There are ways you can build a house using shipping containers that make for a very cozy home and a small foot print. You can also make very large homes out of them and on a small budget. around 2500 for a 40x8x8 or 1500 for a 20x8x8. Check out this link for ideas that use shipping containers.

The other option you have is Pallet built housing (most places give their old pallets away.) Once again you can build a cheap and comfortable home with pallets that can have a large or a small foot print depending on what your looking for. You state that you want a small house I think you'll find these examples of small houses intriguing.

One thing to remember is the position of the house with respect to the sun, the prevailing winds, the slope of the land, and the location of any large trees in the area. These factors can greatly impact your footprint. Being in a location with a steady breeze is great for cutting cooling cost, but the house must be positioned and designed to allow for a cross-breeze through open windows.

I can't help you there, but something to consider in your planning that I just learned is to incorporate your landscaping into your project. Tree placement, vines, etc. That can cut down your AC bill by a lot. Also, things like the type and color of shingles.
