Call of Duty MP pinging out on dial up?
I know, I know, first of all, it's CoD original, and that I am playing via dial-up, but work with me here. I will have semi-decent ping when I start (Upper 100's) but then a couple of minutes later it's up to 999 and I get booted. My computer is newer (March 09), and I am running all the latest updates. I know ping is related to what is using your connection as well as distance, etc. I shut off everything that I *think* is using my connection, and it helped a little, but I am still getting really crappy performance. Any suggestions? I would appreciate it much! The reason I don't have high speed is because all we really ever do online is check email and bank accounts. MAYBE watch a video on youtube... maybe....

OK, I'll resist the urge to "dude!" you :-D
It kind of sounds like your phone line is crummy.
You can try a few things to see if it's something in your home wiring is causing it:
- Disconnect all phones from the wall jacks and then try playing for a while and see if the problem occurs. If it doesn't then start plugging in phones one at a time and then start playing and see if the problem occurs with a particular phone. If it does, then throw that phone in the garbage :-D
- Check that all of the connections for all of the phone jacks are correct and tight -- red to red and green to green. Also check all places where phone wires are connected together. If your connections are made with anything other than scotch-locks, then redo all of the connections with scotch-locks (see link below). Twisting phone wires together to connect two cables together is a no-no.
- Check the wiring on the outside of your house to make sure that the bare wire isn't getting wet and isn't corroded. If it is, clean up the connection as best as you can. If it's really bad, call your phone company to come out and replace the box on the outside of your house.
- Get a REALLY long phone cord and run it from the modem on your computer all the way to the jack on the outside of your house. This will bypass all the internal wiring in your house and give you a direct connection to the phone network. If the problem keeps happening, then the problem is definitely with your phone service and not your home wiring. Call your phone company to complain that there is noise on your connection and that it is causing disconnects after a few minutes of connection.

Back in the day when I had dialup (03 or so, even then it was too late in the game to be using dialup), I was getting 300-400 ms.
Honestly, you'd likely be paying close to the same amount per month for broadband.
