is my cat in heat! or is she pregnant! what are the signs?

i have a cat that we rescued from the streets. we took in her in her 4 kittens so when we had realized that they where her kittens we named her mama and now these kittens are about 4 months old and mama used to through such a fit if we tried to take her outside and now she wants out like every half hour and last night when i came to let her in there was a huge un neutered male cat with her and this morning my dad let her out and she hasn't come back all day. what should i do?

Update:

she sits down and lays down and she hasent been bleeding but she does want out alot and she's been getting kindof crabby and she's been cleaning herself alot and rolling on her back plus when she inside my neutered male cat follows her every where

A cat in heat usually yowls(It's very distinctive, loud, and not like a normal meow), she'd become more affectionate, and she'd assume the mating position frequently(her hind-quarters up in the air), and would do anything to get outside.

It wasn't very good that you sent her outside if she isn't fixed. If she returns home keep her inside and get her fixed as soon as possible! Most shelters will offer cheap spaying/neutering if you're okay with that. If you can't afford that, just keep her inside until you can. If you wait, and she's obviously pregnant, if you can't take care of the kittens just make sure you have good homes for them set up early.

For now, go look for her, and make sure she's okay.

I don't know, but it's totally irresponsible to let an intact female outside. If she was throwing a fit about it, she was probably trying to tell you it's dangerous out there. And with her being in heat, she's attracting every tomcat in town, many of whom carry serious or fatal diseases. This is how they spread.

You may have had good intentions, but your dad is the responsible party here, and this wasn't a "rescue". She's in as much danger right now as she was wandering the streets. Someone should have gotten her spayed and kept her inside. Then you'd know where she is right now.

Bleeding is a sign and wanting to go outside.

    Really?

Get her spayed. Soon. And her kittens.

a female cat will not sit down, it will have her butt in the air if in heat, keep her seperated like in a bathroom until it passes. it will last for a week or 2
