Why do artist retire some of their work? Does this make the piece more valuable in the future?

That's one reason. It depends on the artist. Some artists want the work more than they want the money they can get for it. Others just don't want to live with the rep it's giving them -- now. If you aren't going to think about selling it then you aren't going to make a living at art, but sometimes the reasoning has to have a lot to do with what you want to live with.
