Installing windows 7 = reformating?
I got the Windows 7 disc because I got my computer prior to Windows 7 and if you bought a Vista computer, you will get Windows 7 for free.
I'm just wondering when I install it, will it basically reformat my computer? All my files gone?
Is there an option to start anew?

You'll be given a choice. You can upgrade in place, which will save all your stuff, or you can do a clean installation, which will first delete Vista and all your stuff.
I actually bought a second hard disk and installed that, then had the installation put W7 on the new disk. So I actually have both Vista and 7. This cost $60 or so, but allowed me to have the clean install, which always runs better than an upgrade, and to migrate my stuff over to W7 at my leisure.
