What would you recommend for someone who has never cross-country skied before?

I have always been interested with cross-country skiing, and am curious as to what I would need or tips that I would need to be able to do this type of sport.

Cross-country skiing is great! Do you know if you want to skate or classic? Skating is, well, skating and classic (or touring) is more like running or just walking on skis. Classic can be easier to learn unless you are a good ice skater or roller blader. You can ask at the ski shop where you rent equipment and decide which style you'd like to try. I would rent before you decide to buy so you know what to get and know you will like it. A lesson will help you with the basics of how to stop and turn if the trails have hills. The instructor will also help you be more efficient so you can ski longer without getting too tired. If you just want to get outside and enjoy yourself and the trails are easy, you might find that one lesson to get you going is all you need for now.Have fun!

Source(s): I used to nordic ski race (both classic and skate). I ski at least three or four times a week and won a couple races last winter. I've also taught/coached some friends. I hope you like it, it's great exercise, a very social sport, and a great way to be outside in the winter.

I recommend a set of ski lessons and rental of equipment. XC skiing is different than Alpine, but it is also different than a walk in the park. Also there are several other safety factors to learn that a qualified instructor can teach you.
