How safe is Jamaica for children?

My children are 14 and 5 and are seasoned travelers. We have been all over Mexico and want to try somewhere different this year. They really want to go to Jamaica, but I have heard some negative things, crime and drugs specifically. Any advice would be appreciated. Serious answers only, please.

Update:

We would want to leave the resort to go on tours/excursions. But what about shopping? Or site-seeing on our own?

(Obviously, some people don't know what "serious answers" mean!)

I think that Jamaica is safe for children if you practice all the precautions that you do anywhere you take your children. I have taken my children (8,10, 13) to Jamaica. I made sure that they had a companion all the time. I suggest that you do not leave the resort to site see on your own. You should just participate in the excursions and site seeing things offered by your hotel. The souvenir shop at the hotel should meet all your needs. Jamaica is about having a good time and laying on the beach and that is entirely safe...unless you are planning to travel in hurricane season!

You shoudlnt really have to worry about anything, i lived in Jamaica most of my life .. all the wayy through when I was a child. The only thing you should do is not let your children wonder around by themselves, jus like anywere else you never let your young children go to a place they dont know by themselves .. But Jamaica is a niice place : ) You dont have to worry, and stay with a guide when you are heading out of the hotels .. that helps because you dont know the island very well.

Your safety would not be an issue in jamaica...the drugs abd crime only happen in the communites and not near the tourist attractions........and you wouldnt be going to the communities so theres nothing to be concerned about..you'll really love it the my kids are 16 and 6 and both had a ball this summer stay in montigo bay or nigril

first of all its notably undemanding to get drugs everywhere interior the worldwide, the only drug this is grown in Jamaica is marijuana(ganja/weed/kiki) particular that's quite risk-free for vacationer in Jamaica they are even dealt with greater acceptable than the locals, in addition to u maximum in all probability are going to stay at a hotel if u be attentive to not something or no person in a usa. there is not something to worry, while the little ones come back and tell u how large it became u would have the want to make it ur next holiday.

We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Jamaica because of high levels of serious crime.

Pay close attention to your personal security at all times and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks.

You should avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings in Jamaica as they may turn violent, possibly involving the use of firearms. Authorities may impose curfews.

The hurricane season is June to November when landslides, mudslides and flooding may occur. In the case of a hurricane, monitor local media reports and follow the instructions of local emergency officials

Well don't take them there then period. If you are "so afraid", why go through all the trouble. The crime and drug problem is way worse in Mexico. Nobody is begging you to come to Jamaica. There are lots of other islands, take your kids there. Other people will be more than happy to come.

Jamacia is ok if you stay in the built up areas such a Negril or Ochio Rios. Montego Bay has alot of crime, but you just have to be careful. Keep to the holiday operator for tours as some you can't trust. I wouldn't recommend going out on your own, keep with the tour operator as they know what safe and local updates of crime. TYou could always visit jamacia news and see that way. But Negril is very safe had no problems. Don't stare or look at the locals as they take it you have a problem with them, but Im sure you be fine.

I wouldn't go outside the AI resorts in Jamaica, especially with kids. One exception might be if you are New Yorkers and used to aggressive hawkers and are very street-smart. Even then, I personally wouldn't do it.
