Sentinel heart worm tablets for dogs?
I ordered Sentinel heart worm tablets for my dogs because the vet was more expensive. It says on the website they don't ship prescription meds to non-licensed people, but my shipping order was processed. Is Sentinel considered a prescription?

Sentinel should be a prescription medication, and I would be wary of any site that shipped it without one. Did they ask for your vet's contact information during checkout? Several sites will contact your vet directly for the prescription. The reason heartworm preventatives are prescription only is that your dog needs to be tested for heartworm before taking them and be clear of the parasite. They can be very dangerous when given to a dog that is already infected.

Actually, this isnt exactly what you asked for....its my 2 cents to your question. if you understand how the life cycle of the mosquito works, you will understand how the heartworm works. Do you know heartworm "preventatives" do nothing to "prevent" anything. They act on any present infection at the time. Which is why the poisons are advocated by vets to be given monthly....with little to no understanding of how the lifecycle of the heartworm works, which, by itself, dictates the infection rates in dogs. I do simply this, wait until the temp outside temp drops to below 57 for a week or so, more than a 24 hr drop to this temp stops the reproduction cycle in mosquitos. A mosquitos entire life is a mere 30 days MAXIMUM in length. Without mosquitos, there can be no heartworm lifecycle. I dose with plain heartgaurd, then 45 days later, dose again, then have the vets run a test to be sure they are clear, and I do nothing more until the following year, when the temp drops again. If by some chance (Ive not have it happen) you have one come up positive, even after 2 doses, 45 days apart, dose again, and retest 6 months later. Its usually clean, from what I can tell of the experiences of others. This is the recommended treatment from most homeopathic practicioners. Tho, most folks I know simply do nothing except routinely test and still have no positives. I have hairless dogs tho and it makes me nervous to just do nuthing, tho in the 8 years Ive had hairless dogs, Ive not had a positive result and I live in big time skeeter country in the southern US. We've got skeeters here big enough to carry us off!

Yes, it is. Usually it will process but will have to be verified through your vet, the reason is because a dog has to be screened for heart-worms before a treatment to prevent it is given dogs have to be checked i think once a year for a heartworm test unless they have been give a monthly supply for 12 months and if a dog has heart-worm and given a preventive it can kill them, so it probably won't ship but maybe I'm wrong never ordered from petmeds, but i've seen that the require a vet phone number

Sentinel Flavor Tabs are a preventative for life-threatening heartworm disease in dogs and puppies. They may only be sold or prescribed by a licensed veterinarian. The tablets are beef flavored to make them acceptable to dogs and thus easy to administer.
