Australia without a doubt, they will have the best pace attack with the likes of Bollinger, Siddle, Harris and Johnson all who can bowl over 140+ consistently also having Clarke, Marsh and Watson as great batsmen to back their bowlers. With in an year they will be 1 again and will be hard for any other team to snatch a victory in their den.
India doesn't have the bowlers and with the retirement of Dravid, Laxman and Sachin we are doomed in the batting line up. We are already finding it heard for a replacement of Dada, with Injuries to Dravid and Laxman, South Africa got a glimpse at India's future which didn't look that promosing not atleast in the first innings.
People are being way too harsh on Saha, it's not his fault that he got to face a pumped up Steyn on his debut. Blame the selectors for giving him a missed opportunity.
South Africa rightly so will be no 2 and India will fall to 3.
ph: England plays negative cricket, sorry but this is the bitter truth. Winning one test and somehow managing two whereas we all know it would have been 2-1 to South Africa and at the end the result was justified. When was the last time England won a test series in Australia, Australia have been thrashing England in England, just lost the last 2 tour to England. England can clearly never reach Australia's standards or even have an aggresive leader like Punter.

I believe in ODI's Australia will be and in Tests it will probably be a close call between Australia and South Africa but Australia should be able to hold them out once we get to number 1 again.
We are miles better than the next best in ODI's which is the reson we haven't lost a world cup match since 1996, winning the past 3 world cups, past two champions trophies and been top ranked ODI side for the majority of the time over the past 13 years.

I think if you consider tests then it's definitely going to be SouthAfrica.India's benchstrength is not strong enough and quality lack of bowlers in the side is going to hurt them dear in the future.
So SouthAfrica at the top, with Australia,India and England fighting it out for the remaining spots and also challenging the Proteas for the top position with a healthy competition.
As far as ODI is concerned many teams are in race but at the moment Aussies are
playing really well and have good bunch of players. So they would remain for long time in top spot I guess.India,NewZealand and Srilanka is also doing pretty well.SA One day form is little concern at the moment but when they play really well it's pretty difficult to beat them. They are dangerous ODI side.
So it's Australia I suppose with three or more teams I mentioned giving them a fight for the top position.
However I think ODI balance can swing from one side to another. It all depends upon how a series between two top nations will turn out to be.

Strange how many people ignore England, who in their last two series have beaten Australia and drawn a series in SA, we have a balanced side with a lot of youth and no one particularly at retirement age.
Currently there are 4 sides that are capable of beating anyone, looking long term though India will have the biggest loss due to retirement of world class bats, and coupled with the weakest bowling attack they wont progress, meaning the other three will gain a distinct advantage.

Edit: Know thyself You say England play negative Cricket, you should try and understand the differences in formats of the game. A 5 day test match is a tactical game, sometimes you cannot win so rely on your bats to hold on, and its up to the other team to get your wickets, thats what makes Test matches unique. Fact, the series in SA ended 1-1, a draw, if you go back over all the records every country will have played tests where they have played for the draw, part of the game, one that can also call for an aggresive captain. Since you ask England last won in Aus in 1986/7, but Aus have not won since 2001 in England, Is 9 years acceptable for your 'standards'? Bit silly really to talk about standards at all , You probably mean ability or class, as matching standards is really not something sides compare, its on the field play that matters, and this is down to talent. I know it must be a bitter pill to swallow when you go from best in the world to third behind SA and England but get over it, you lost the ashes, and your only as good as your last result. Australia & South Africa.
Won't be India. Their ageing list may see them drop as low as 5th in the next 3-4 year period while NZ, England, West Indies & Sri Lanka improve.

either southafrica or australia these two teams have a high percentage to be at no 1 continously but not india because the senior bastmen is not gonna be longer for india. It will be 1-2 years may be 3 at most for dravid and tendulkar to retire and even lexman.

It could be a musical chair among three or four teams.
Australia will be the team to enjoy more success.
