Images on the ice...are they projected or added by computer before airing on tv?

My husband and I were watching the olympic speed skating today and we were arguing about how they put the flags for each competitors country on the ice for each round. I said that they are projected onto the ice and therefore are visible to the people in the stands too. He said that they are computer generated images stuck on to the footage as it airs... So who's right? Or are we both wrong? Thanks in advance if you can clear this up. : )

It is computer generated, just like for the summer olympics there was a flag for each swimmer.

The logos/writing/lines that you see on the ice are actually painted under the ice.

During the opening ceremonies, they used projectors to show the flowing prairie grasses with the acrobatic young man. During ice shows, producers also use projectors to put images on the ice - you'll see that during the Figure Skating Gala Exhibition.

However, during competitions, they wouldn't risk distracting a competitor by projecting anything on the ice. Those flags are computer generated images that are overlaid on the footage by the broadcaster.
