Hi!
I've taken the train before. It was not bad. You can book online at http://www.ktmb.com.my/
or just go down to the station at Tanjung Pagar to buy the ticket (do note, it's much cheaper if your journey starts in Malaysia.
for other methods of travelling to Malaysia, you can look at http://hubpages.com/hub/Traveling-from-Singapore-t... for the pros and cons

Look in to the website for tickets and all other stuff.
But for purchasing go to Johor (Malaysia) and buy or board from there. the price of the ticket is the same in ringgit or SGD so you'd save more than 50%
