What is this button on my laptop for?

I have a compaq presario laptop, and there is a button under the space bar, above the mousepad, and I am wondering what it is for. It has five very small, round lights that are either white or orange, depending on whether or not I push the button. Nothing else seems to happen, though. Any ideas?

Update:

There is a small rectangle etched into the plastic by the lit buttons. It isn't the wireless button, that is up top near the power button. I don't think if is sleep mode, as nothing visible happens when I press it, except the color changes.

Given that location, I suspect that button disables the built in track pad. You might not notice this if you've plugged in a mouse and are using it rather than the pad.

We need more information to answer this question. There should be some sort of symbols on or around the buttons. They may be for things such as WLAN (wireless network adapter) power, mute or volume control, sleep, or quick access buttons which can be programmed to open whatever you want.
