Should I pay an accountant or do FREE Turbo Tax?

I am not a dependent, single, have no dependents, made about 30.000 last year, paid about $492 in school loans in 2009, don't own a house, and have the regular small deductions such as clothes bought for work, hair cuts, mileage and gas spent for going to other stores (my company made me go), etc.

What do you recommend so that I can get my maximum refund? thanx!

Update:

the $492 were INTEREST paid, by the way.

Use the IRS free e-file and take standard deductions would be the cheapest way and likely have the same result. The deductions you have noted are not likely to exceed your standard deduction and some of them are not deductible in the first place.

If you can use the free version of TT there's no need to go to an accountant.

You may be able to deduct the interest on the student loans but will have to file Form 1040 or Form 1040-A to claim that. The free version of TT may or may not handle that as it's usually limited to taxpayers who can file Form 1040-EZ. You can also use the IRS Free E-File service to find tax prep services that might handle the student loan interest so it's worth looking there.

Work clothing (unless it's safety gear or wholly unsuitable for wear off-the-job) and haircuts are not deductible. While unreimbursed mileage (other than commuting) is deductible you need more than $5,700 in itemized deductions to make it worthwhile to deduct that. Since it's subject to a 2% floor you'd need $6,300 worth of mileage deductions (more than 11,454 unreimbursed business miles) just to break even. The free versions of TT won't handle that but paid version certainly will.

If you think can deduct clothes and haircuts, you probably are not a good candidate for software. You will keep looking for options that aren't there.

BTW, it's standard mileage *or* actual expenses, but not both.

It sounds like you won't even benefit from itemizing. Use the free software or just go to the post office and pickup a 1040ez.
