Colonialism...Good or bad?

Many of the undeveloped world's problems are blamed on colonialism, and I personally would never want to be ruled by a foreign power. However in recent years many of those supposedly "liberated" from colonial oppression now want it back.

Consider the words of these authors. No malice is intended, only objective, academic interest.

Come Back, Colonialism, All Is Forgiven (Time Magazine)

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1713...

"We should just give it all back to the whites," the riverboat captain says. "Even if you go 1,000 kilometers down this river, you won't see a single sign of development. When the whites left, we didn't just stay where we were. We went backwards."

Haiti and the Blacks (by a black author from Botswana)

http://www.sundaystandard.info/search/search_item....

"I hope black people will learn a lesson from the earthquake that hit Haiti."

"From now onwards, I want black leaders to shut up and never accuse ever white people of being bad. I am sick and tired of big words such as imperialism and neo colonialism which are unable to rescue victims of the earthquake."

No, those guys are mistaken, I'd say. Colonialism was all about funneling wealth from one nation to another. Look what it did for India: that country went from an incredibly wealthy world power to a third world nation very quickly. The development that colonialism caused was solely for the benefit of the white folks. This is why the US and Canada are doing well while much of Africa is not; white folks actually moved here, but not many moved to Africa. We got more developed than a lot of that continent did. Even when colonialists tried to "help" natives, it was at best horribly misguided and at worst abusive (read about the boarding schools Native American children were forced into). The problems that many of these nations now have are due to colonialism, and adding more won't help. We need to _stop_ meddling and to learn to help these people on their terms, not ours.

I think the only reason they wanted white people back is because they were the ones that messed them up. It's hard to say if they would have been better off without colonialism because it's too late for that, but if white people had stayed they might not have dropped to the poverty level so fast.

    I hope that made sense.....

only interpreting those solutions are going to furnish me a nightmare thinking of if those musicians formed a band. Worst Vocalist: Chad Kroeger Worst Drummer: Meg White (even if I do only like the White Stripes) Worst Bassist: Nikki Sixx Worst Guitarist: Herman Lee
