scent that repels woodpeckers?
I live in the mountains of northern CA and a woodpecker has decided to have a go at the sides of our wooden house. I have to go out at least 4 times a day to shoo it off. I know about hanging shiny objects, etc, but our house is quite tall and I can't get to the roof. My husband is currently out of town and will take care of it when he returns, but does anyone know of a scent that they don't like that I could spray on the
side of the house in the meantime? I want to discourage it before the hold gets too big and the squirrels move in, which happened to our neighbors! Thanks for any help!

If I recall right I think there are places in CA that has those weird Asian termites that instead of coming up through the ground they fly along and come in on the upper area of a homes roof.
Now I could be way wrong there because I cannot exactly remember where those termites are found in the USA.
Even if it is not them your woodpecker is finding some kind of food source in the wood of your home unless it is trying to make a nest or it has just gone insane.
It is against the law to kill them but I am sure you knew that anyway and I know that even if it was not you don't want to kill it otherwise you would not be here asking this question.
I like and enjoy woodpeckers but sometimes they become pests.
I have one other non lethal way of dealing with it but if I mention it here I am afraid someone else might take my advice and accidentally kill one.
I would concentrate on what the food source is that the woodpecker is going after in your home.

Over the years we've tried dozens of things, and nothing ever worked. The woodpeckers destroyed the trim on the house in several places. After replacing the damaged trim with cement-based trim that looks like wood, my husband bought a pellet gun, and the birds succumbed to lead poisoning.
