Well... They married because she was pregnant, in the first place. Anne was 26 and married Shakespeare when he was 18, and he was more than a little coerced into it by her family. They didn't actually see each other all that often. She stayed in Stratford and he moved to London. He visited her about once a year, and he only moved back to Stratford a couple of years before he died.

So, basically, you might start off having her write about being unsure whether William married her out of love or because her family forced him. Have her describe the birth of her first child (Susanna), have her complaining that he was gone all the time, tell how she misses him. Describe some of his visits, and when she became pregnant the second time - then when she had her twins (boy/girl, Hamnet and Judith). Describe her hearing rumours of his infidelity, and hearing wealthier people coming through Stratford talking of seeing plays in London, and she wonders if they were her husband's plays. Hamnet died at age 11 of unknown causes, but depending on how much you want to write, you might not go that far into the journal.

This would be her day-to-day life. Nothing spectacular, but actually pretty boring and even lonely for her. She was left behind so he could flit around on his own. I love Shakespeare's work, but he wasn't that great a husband.

    Some dates for important entries:

November 27, 1582 - marriage license was given (likely married William that day or within a day or two)

May 26, 1583 - Susanna was baptised (children were baptised a few days after birth)

February 2, 1585 - Hamnet and Judith were baptised

later in 1592 - William's plays were being done on London stages

August 11, 1596 - Hamnet was buried (he likely died about a week before burial)

  • William Shakespeare only lived with Anne Hathaway for a little while. They had three children, but one died at a very young age. From their marriage in 1582 to his popularity in England being discovered about by 1592, nothing is known. It's called the lost years. After that, Shakespeare by himself and created over 30 plays in 26 years. His wife eventually moved back in with him in 1613 but that was only 3 years before his death. I suggest you make up a lot of it. You can even create an entry about when he left.

    Hope this helps!
