can you fix knitting thats been run on a hot cycle?

My daughter switched the dial while I was cooking dinner and two of her best hand made cardigans that my grandmother made her and the first one I ever made too (took me 10 days) have been stretched out. They are still the right size but you can see though the knitting. Is there anyway of making it look wearable again? I've soaked them in cold water and run them on a cold cycle and I'm hoping this will help. Has anyone got any ideas?

I'm not sure if it will work for this, but when I've accidentally shrunk something wool, I get a bottle of the cheapest hair conditioner on the market, pour it into a basin and soak the item in the conditioner until it's completely saturated. I then work the item back to it's usual shape and let it dry like that. A rinse in cold water and blocking again sometimes fixes it.

In this case, I think I'd use a much more diluted amount of the conditioner, but soak the item and then lay it out flat to dry.
