What's the haps on shaving on the grain vs. against the grain?

I'm 30 and I STILL have no idea how/why this debate came to be. It seems to be that conventional wisdom says to shave on the grain to lessen the chances of nicks and ingrown hairs, but I've been shaving against the grain since I started shaving 15 years ago. EVERY single time I've tried on grain vs. against grain, against has left me smoother than a newborn's bottom. Does the on grain argument stem from a time when we didn't have the snazzy razors we do now? Fill me in, gents.

sorry i saw your question and yes ima female but we shave alot more than guys!! And the reason that they say with the grain is so you dont get ingrown hairs, they can get really infected if left to fester and then some need to be removed surgically. but all girls who shave will tell you that against the grain is more efficient!!
