I would like to contact an authority on Mrs Fitzherbert?

My grandfather left me some documents regarding proof of the existence of the children of Mrs Fitzherbert, apparently two - a boy and a girl and who adopted them.

Update:

Thank you Jas and Anon. Seems Patriot is clueless about Royaly though - perhaps he should be browsing some other forum?

I don't have any official contact details but I do know a little bit about her.

George IV (while Prince Regent) contracted an illegal marriage with her. Under normal circumstances the marriage would have been legal but was void because of the Royal marriages Act 1774) which stipulated that "no heir could marry without the consent of the sovereign".

There was also another hurdle that would have proved problematic had the marriage been considered legal. Under the provision laid down by the Act of Settlement 1701, The Prince Regent would have lost his place in the line of succession because any marriage to a Roman Catholic renders the indivdual ineligable to succeed to the throne for a fear of a Catholic succession. It was illegal anyway, so the future George IV retained his place in the line of succession.

Parliament granted an annual annuity to the Prince Regent in exchange for his agreement to marrying, Caroline of Ansbach. This marriage proved extremely unhappy and George IV (when he became King) attempted to divorce the Queen (Caroline) and strip her of her titles, styles, precedence and pre-eminence of a Queen through the passing of "the pains and penalties bill" which would have done this but the act was stopped from going through and the King and Queen unofficially seperated (with Caroline going to the continent).

During the "trial", the Queen expressed "my only guilt is mayying the husband of Mrs Fitzherbert".

When William IV became King, he offered to make Mrs Fitzherbert a Royal Duchess, but she declined the offered by stating "I have gone through life as Mrs Fitzherbert and I will end it as Mrs Fitzherbert" (or words to that effect).

    I hope that helps.

EDIT: Your question interested me and so I did a bit of digging. I found this on wikipedia to add to your research.

"The second codicil to Maria Fitzherbert's will[3] outlines her two principal beneficiaries, and includes a personal note, "...this paper is addressed to my two dear children... I have loved them both with the [unclear] affection any mother could do, and I have done the utmost in my power for their interests and comfort..." Their married names were Mary Ann Stafford-Jerningham and Mary Georgina Emma Dawson-Damer. Mary Ann Jerningham was nominally Maria's 'niece', and was raised as Mary Ann Smythe. Mary Dawson-Damer was nominally the daughter of Admiral Lord Hugh Seymour[4] and Lady Anna Horatia Waldegrave. Hugh Seymour had been a close associate of George IV since their youth, and Hugh's son George Francis Seymour was an executor and minor beneficiary of Maria's will. The will makes no reference to any sons'

    I hope that helps to!

Source(s): www.wikipedia.com EDIT AGAIN: Patriot, you're a moron. Mrs Fitzherbert was George IV's first wife. She was a huge bone of contention within the Royal family because of her illegal marriage to the Prince Regent (later George IV). You are such an uneducated moron. He is not trying to contact her, she's dead. Moron!

What an amazing find, you could contact The National Archives at Kew. Alternatively if you would rather deal with a single person, you could write to one of the history professors at Oxford University for their advice. Dr Ian Archer who lectures on this time period seems appropriate.

And you posted this in royalty because.............?

If you want to contact such a person, try searching THEM, not asking questions in a completely unrelated forum.

    Works better.
