Why does Boeing advertise?

I have seen ads on TV for the Boeing Corporation. The people who see the ads do not buy airplanes. Even if we travel by air, we don't choose an airline based on which aircraft they fly. We have no say in the matter. Or to put it differently, airplanes are not purchased based on spur of the moment reactions to advertising. The purchase of Boeing aircraft is a Corporate decision, based on studies and negotiations. Maybe it's just a tax write-off?

My dad works there, and ive wondered that myself. The commercials are there to promote a good image of a big corporation. Those GE ecomaginatioon and Dow human element commercials fall in the same category. My problem with boeings is that it is by far the lamest of the three campaigns, especially since they probably make the coolest products.

Those commercials are so politically correct its sickening. They have people from every race and gender, even a guy in a wheel chair. And that slogan "thats why were here" is pretty bad too. 90% percent of the engineers (at least in STL) are middle aged white men, but theres only one of those guys in the commercial.

My dad works on the defensive stuff here in st. louis, and he had no clue about the ad campaign. He thinks its funny how he literally designs weapons of war but the commercials are so bubbly and peaceful. Im talking lethal weapons. Ive taken tours of the place, and you wouldnt believe some of the stuff. Secret hangers with the next gen of unmanned fighters, 30 cal machine guns laying around non chalantely on the factory floor. And racks and racks of missiles and smart bombs. simply put the place is bad *** and these commercials do a such bad job of conveying that.

They should put me in charge of making the next one, id do a much better job

Because the play them a lot during December so little kids can point and say "mommy I want THAT for Christmas (or whatever)" then put it in a letter for Santa (the easter bunny sand man or whatever) and receive a major letdown on the day when the presents (gifts packages whatever) instead of their Boeing 747-400! That is exactly why!

Boeing does government (military) work which is sometime based on cost plus 10% contracts or their overhead rate for military contracts include monies for research and development as a percentage of their direct costs. This gives them a chance to charge the costs to the government in order to enhance their image with the general public. If the direct costs are larger, the percentage applied yields them more dollars from the government or your tax dollars. Isn't this wonderful!!
