T.J. Oshie took 5 of 7 attempts during the U.S. - Italy game at the Worlds. Is this stupid?

I also noticed this happening at the Olympics, with players taking two or three attempts. I think a player should have their turn and then wait until everyone else has a go before they are allowed a second go. Agree?

Update:

i understand that they don't want the shootout to go on and on, but how often does that happen in the nhl, plus on the few occasions it does happen it gives the chance for an unlikely hero, like Adrian Aucoin for Phoenix, he went on a bit of a shootout scoring streak that no one could have predicted.

Update 2:

i was going to let that minor detail slip, i didn't feel it necessary to ask any awkward questions on the standard of the U.S. teams play

LOL work with me on this one dazzle, but I have a better question to ask..

"Why is the USA even in a shootout against the Italians to begin with"

Anyways to your question, Yeah I find it stupid, I mean all these players are good enough, and should each get their turn to showcase their abilities, making TJ Oshie take all the penalty shots is like the US Coach saying "I have no confidence in anybody else except TJ to win the game for us now".

That's the real backstabber, The USA must not be confident, and yeah I think everyone should get a shot before going again, It's fair play.

EDIT: Yeah It's an IIHF Rule also where your allowed taking as many shots as you want after the 3rd shooter, it's stupid, but the rule doesn't mean you gotta put a player out 5 times

I would partially agree with you but the goal is to shorten the shootout session, I have read. They don't want long sessions. That's why they let the best shooters try again and again.

In soccer, everyone else has a go before anyone could try a second. So it happens that the goalies must shoot!

  • This is one of the multitude of rules differences between IIHF/Olympic competition and the NHL.

NHL- cannot re-use shooters until entire roster has been used (all 18 skaters)

Olympic/IIHF- can re-use shooters after initial 3 round shootout

Blame the IIHF; it's in their rulebook.
