Need to get a cable internet connection to 2 PCs. What's the best way?

The ISP wants to charge us $150 to switch to wi-fi, and neither of our PCs are even wi-fi compatible.

So which would work best? Putting a splitter on the cable and getting a second modem, or getting a modem with more than one cat5 plug? Would either of these options even work at all? I'm still sort of hazy on IP addresses...can 2 PCs share one? I just really don't want to spend $50 on a new modem just to find out it doesn't work.

Thanks everyone!

The cheapest way might be to buy a low cost wired router/4-port switch. Then all you need are three ethernet cables. One from modem to router input and two (one to each of the computers) from the switch. Configuring the router is pretty straightforward. The router uses the IP given by the cable company and hands out IP numbers to the two computers.
